get some kind of 6-0 to 6-3 funshape. you do not want to start on a shortboard.
hahahaha @ ur avatar.....
how much am i expecting for a board?
used? for a decent enough used board to use for awhile you might be able to find something between $150-$250
new... I wouldn't go new for your first board. especially now.
sweet, expected it to be more because they are larger than skimboards
whats the difference between a funboard and a shortboard?
likea 6ft short vs a 6ft fun?
shape?float?
shape and dims.
you will need sometime close to 20 inches wide, and probably like 2.5 inches thick. whit (ZBR) can help you more.

that's an 8 foot funshape but you are a small guy
hopefully he still isnt dedicated on that one thread
this is hard, I started when I was probably 145 lbs or so, so I'm not really sure what to recommend for somebody that small. I think your best bet is an eggish, fishy shape, in the 6 foot range, like doug said. It would function for you like a wide funboard. I learned on a 7'2" funboard and soon switched to a 6' thruster. A 6' thruster would be way too big for you, though. If you go for a standard shortboard shape do not go over 5'10". You will grow out of that quickly so get a used, but you don't want to get one you'll "grow into", because if you don't have the right sized board you'll lose interest.
Alternately, you could go with like a 7-8 foot funboard shape which would function for you like a full longboard. Either will be good, the longer board will be easier to balance on and easier to catch waves on but the shorter board will be more versatile once you get into it.

yeh i started learning on a 6'3" Fish shaped board, VERY wise idea, makes it easy to go onto other boards later on.
i have a sick 5'8 x 17.5 x 1 7/8 shortboard i will sell you for 175 bucks. i used it once, it would be a sick high performance board for someone your size. the board also has a layer of s-glass in the lam.
any pics love to skim?
what do you guys think of the deal, i would think it would b a little small

6'2" is too big for you! That board would be a bit big or just the right size even for me (5'11", 167 lbs). If you're trying to get a standard shortboard shape, go w/ the dimensions lovestoskim posted. That board sounds like just your size.Originally Posted by hobo

well it also depends on where you live.
If you live in a place with little/small waves, get a longboard (like 8'0)
Longboards are extremely easy to learn on.
I got a funboard that was 6'8'' and I was about 5'9'' at the time. It was hard to learn on (well I was in the gulf so that might matter)
but yea, consider a longboard to learn on if the place you live in has small waves
Only downside is that they are hard to transport, and they are pricey
i live around santa cruzzzz
how much harder is it to learn on a shortboard?
if you're serious about it, you'll learn regardless. I didn't stick with a funboard for more than a month or two before getting a shortboard.
this board is sick...i wouldnt have it if it werent. i highly suggest not going any bigger than a 5'10. anything thicker than 2 1/8 and anything wider than 18 is gonna be a stretch for a "high performance" shortboard. i rode this board for one 45 minute session. it is glassed 4+4(s glass)+4(tail patch) and 4 on the bottom. equipped with smoke colored fcs p2 plugs. the blank is also clark foam. reason ill sell for such a fat deal is because i work at the hawaiian island creations surfboard factory and i have 2 brand new boards coming shortly and this one was just a tad thin for me.
I bet your little sister weighs more than you do.Originally Posted by lovestoskim
i learned on a 6'6 funboard....5 days later i bought a 5'11 x 18 x 2 1/8 high performance g602 eric arakawa, i never looked back and havent ever since. everyone's learning curve is different, if he wants a high performance shortboard i wont hesitate to sell him one at a great price.Originally Posted by noogie
