I'm going to Kenya

Tomorrow. Myself and 8 others from my church are gonna be over there for just under 3 weeks. While there we're gonna be doing lots of AIDS education (we'll be visiting 23 schools and talking to about 600 students at each.) The rumors there about the disease are gnarly, like that if you have sex with a virgin it'll cure your disease - doesn't go a long way towards fixing the problem. So hopefully we'll be able to make a dent in that. Also, we're gonna be talking with the local churches, trying to get them motivated to take some responsibility for their countrymen by furthering education about AIDS too.
This is kinda a big deal for me. I've been across Eastern Europe speaking in prisons and visiting orphanages, but they didn't have the same diseases or animals with such big teeth...
So I know there are some of the praying sort of guys on here, if you guys shoot up a prayer for me I'd appreciate it.
I think that's it. I'm out of here until the 27th - back just in time for a Rise Against show.

awesome man. good for you! we need people helpin out over there. I had read an article in the past on AIDS and contraceptives for Human Geo. The rumors about AIDS and condoms are so sad but true.

I was in Africa earlier this year, as part of a humanitarian aid joint-multi task force, delivering food, building facilities, teaching hygiene, etc. Had a really good time for the most part, met alot of fascinating people. Saw some pretty disturbing things as well. Lots of children with missing limbs due to illness, and land mines.

Much respect to you sir. Missionary work is so under-appreciated yet so necessary.

^ this may add to the reason why missionary work seems so unapreciated, and I am not trying to sound ignorant or anything, but how do you guys go about introducing religion to them?

Actually I spent my whole last semester studying failed missionary efforts in Kenya (buying slaves and forcing them to convert apparently didn't work so well, go figure) and the effects that they had. Personally, I know I'm not the smartest guy and know I can't win all the debates. And I know pointing a gun at people, starving them, refusing to treat them, or whatever else people think of doesn't work either. My bottom line is if people aren't ready to hear it, I'm not gonna force it on them. I think that's especially important in a place like Africa, where people have so many other things on their mind (dying) that the best way you can share the gospel to them is by living it out and caring for them. It seems to me a lot of times people forget that Jesus told his followers to go care for the widows and orphans, so that's what we're working on. Beyond that, I like telling short stories from my life: How before I started learning about Jesus I constantly had this issue with shame and how today I'm not dealing with that and I feel like I have a purpose in life and something to work for and desire. Keeping it simple and honest.

anyway, thats awesome. id love to go to kenya or another under developed country, and do that kind of work. that is a great way of going about witnessing. i try to do the same thing; if you want to hear or are interested, im more than happy to tell someone all about it, but if not, i can wait. if more people thought and acted this way, it wouldnt bring such a hypocratic image to religious people. remember this

Both. The guy leading the team works for the Pregnancy Resource Center, so he knows pretty well that people don't listen when you tell them "No more fun." Abstinence if they're up for it, but most influence on contraception.
