    Default Board shape

Hello all! I have decided to get a custom shaped board but I am having some trouble deciding on what shape. I see some subtle differences on board shapes and haven't been able to find threads that discuss why they are different. For instance.

    Rounder or sharper noses
    sharp rails
tail: pointy, slightly rounded, flat(wave zone) (iknow iknow just asking)
rocker height (hard to find this stat even on manufacturer sites)
    rounder overall shape or thin
I have seen some boards with a groove that runs around the top
    does thickness affect shape?

Thanks for the insight in advance!
PS. Due to some past descriptive threads I think I understand the constant, hybrid rocker now!

    1.Rounder or sharper noses
    2.sharp rails
3.tail: pointy, slightly rounded, flat(wave zone) (iknow iknow just asking)
4.rocker height (hard to find this stat even on manufacturer sites)
    5.rounder overall shape or thin
6.I have seen some boards with a groove that runs around the top
    7.does thickness affect shape?

1.i heard that sharper noses go faster.. plus they look kool
2.when me and my friend were makin our boards his dad - who used to surf and make his own boards - said that sharper rails give better float
3.i read that squarer tails give more stabability where sharper ones have more manuverability
4.the less rocker the faster but the more choppy the water is the more you need
5.i personally favor the thinner surfboard style shape
    6.im not sure
    7.yes thicker = better float; thinner = more manuverability(sp?)

so i personally would have a board with a sharp nose, sharp rails, sharp tail, medium rocker maybe 2- 2 1/2 inches in the nose maybe 1 1/2- 2" in the tail, thin surfboard style, 3/4" thick maybe rounds down to 5/8" on the rails

and a longer board maybe something between 48"-54" x 18"-20" maybe

hope that answered your question.. i edited it about 5,000 times..

btw i have no wave riding experience i just read a lot lmao

sharper rails allow for better turning as do bigger rockers

very true. and joe i think u pretty much have everything correct. and i have seen the boards with the groove around the outside. im not sure wat the purpose is, but my guess is 1. for looks. and 2. it makes the board lighter?

I have seen only one company do that, I have not made any that way, so my guess is it would make the board stronger, but if it's right next to the rail it may mess up the water flow along the rail, this could make the board slower! Might be good for rail grabs

i have only seen walzer put grooves and i think it may have to do with the fact that they can also be used as kiteboards im pretty sure, possibly something to do with that

but as for the custom shape goes. if you have no idea what any of those things do then i would suggest going with a non-custom shape. most of the shape the companies make they make because they are battle tested and work the best.

rounded noses and rounded boards overall have more float than a sharp nose and skinnier board, but sharper noses and skinnier boards often have more speed.

wait so how does rail shape affect how it rides?

so if you go faster you dont need that extra float and you have that extra speed to get air off waves plus skinny boards are the shiznit

and im pretty sure sharp rails gives more float..

the sharper the rail, the better the board turns.

The rounder your tail is, the easier you can turn, but the harder it its to hold the line (ride the wave, not wrap). Same with the nose. But a pointier nose will be a "little" faster than a round one. But you must also consider, if this is your first board, you are not even goin to be able the tell the difference between any shapes, It's rather subtle. I would just trust in the skimboard manufacturer to make your board until you get more experience and know exactly what you want.
