A valid point but I believe my client stated "i dont live by the beach and never have, this was the first time i had seen dolphins swimming close to the shore like that, and i immediately recognized them as dolphins" which would imply that he is neither familiar with the behavioral patterns of dolphin nor a connoisseur of dolphins. He is simply able to identify them by lay standards.

dude you are a guy who skims. Regardless of whether or not you've lived by the ocean, you are familiar with it to some extent. This woman is a tourist who probably knows nothing of the ocean except that it's a good place to take the kids on vacation. She probably turns the channel during shark week and doesn't know the difference between a shark's body and a dolphin's body, unless it washed up onshore. You're speaking from a biased point of view, at least realize that.

well i wouldnt say that exactly, i'm relatively familiar with their behavioral patterns, although i would definitely not say im a connoisseur, in hawaii last summer i hopped off a boat and was swimming about 10 feet away from a mother and her pup playing around (which was unbelievably cool), it was just the first time id seen them from the same setting as that lady

edit in reply to zbr: i will admit that i have way more reason to recognize the difference then her, i havent said to the contrary, what im saying is that she is either completely unfamiliar with the look of a dolphin and the look of a shark, or she is retarded, and it is very possible that she has never seen dolphin before, i just find it unlikely, so i lean towards the latter

Better watch your ass before that dolphin kicks your ass for coming near her pup, like flipper used to do the sharks...

Maybe, but for real, people always tell me about stories of these hardcore commercial fishing guys who are more scared of dolphins than sharks, because they got attacked before, and got the air knocked outta them by the dolphins. Maybe its true, i dont kno, but I dont really see why someone would make that shit up...

the best I've seen is two giant black guys come racing straight to the shore in va beach and literally jump off their still-moving waverunners onto shore, falling face first and getting up and running, because they "saw a shark". I promptly walked over and explained to them the difference between a shark dorsal and a dolphin dorsal.. it was in the middle of a weekend though, the beach was packed. Hilarious.

that's how dolphins beat the shit out of sharks, by ramming them. Whenever I'm surfing early morning alone and I'm sketched out, the second I see a dolphin fin, there's that first "OMG!!!" reaction, and then instant euphoria, knowing I won't have to worry about any sharks for as long as he's around.

No, they said that when they went free diving and what not, they would literally jet towards you, and hit you in the stomach and chest, and knock the air out of them. If you've ever been free diving, these guys can make it to like 60', and being down even 20' with the air knocked outta you is pretty fracked up...

Thats pretty random to "hate fish." But w.e. anywayz, free diving for me is the shit. I like it alot better than scuba diving, just cuz there's nothing connected to you or anything.

Usually I stick more to diving conch than anything, but its fun just to see how far you can make it sometimes, usually its like 30' max.

Everyone is missing the point here, I'm ashamed of all of you. This lady comes up, and puts her hands on your board, leaning over it, exposing her cleavege while warning you of sharks. She is obviously hitting on you, and wants you to take her behind some rocks to have your way with her, and you act like an ass. Way to go, pat yourself on the back. Pussy was just served to you on a silver platter and you turned it down....

On a much unrelated note, I was down in Boca last weekend standing in about waist deep water (I was standing becasue having friends who don't skim SUCKS, they bring you to beaches with frackin sand bars!!!) and about a 6ft tarpon broke the water about 4 ft in front of me. I screamed like a little bitch at first, then realized it was a tarpon and calmed down. But instinctively I felt like a bitch....

Actually it is very common to see tarpon working up and down the beaches of S. Florida this time of year.

maybe it was none of these.... maybe she was with her 3 kids and was like 50 years old. plus, id rather just keep skimming than take off my wetsuit and everything just to do her.

The same thing happened to me at baker a couple weeks ago. The two and sometimes 3 dolphins just do laps up and down the beach all day. A woman came up and asked us "Is that a shark?" to which I deadpanned "yes, but we don't care" Her look was hilarious until I explained that no, they were dolphins and blah blah blah.

As a side note, when I am the only one going into the water at Baker and the dolphins aren't there, I occassionally start to think, your chances of getting attacked by a shark is 1 in 5 mil, but that doesn't seem as comforting when you are the only one getting wet.

yeah, i normally dont worry about sharks at baker too much, but it was eerily calm yesterday and i was the only one in the water, it was probably the smallest and calmest ive ever seen baker, so a shark would have had no trouble getting close up to the shore to eat me, but seeing a pod of dolphins made me feel a million times better, i'm pretty sure they wouldnt be hanging around when sharks were in the area, once they left and i saw a seal swimming out there was when i worried, i'm pretty sure the only sharks around here are great whites, and they love them some seals

Yeah, we saw quite a few of them about 100 - 300 yards off shore jumping out of the water. This particular one was only about 25-30 ft off shore. And nothing was chasing it, it was very calm. Just casually broke the surface in between us... I sorta wished I had my mask and fins, the visability was good. Real good compared to the gulf that I'm used to...
