I'd say watch the movements of how skateboarders do it on quarter pipes, that helps a ton if you bring that style over.
And you don't necessarily have to come off the wave right when it's peaking...

I ride the J-gordon fish, which is a wood board, and it's fun as shit. I like it much better than my foam board.
I don't think it being foam or wood really matters for learning especially.

I've found that if I stare at the peak as I'm running for the wave I'm able to better follow and get to the best part of the wave which gives me the best chance of being able to catch the wave.
