If you make it to Maui, there are two main places to skim...
Makena, or Big Beach, and Kaanapali point....
Yeah, the top on the list would be Aliso Beach...then there is also the Wedge in Newport Beach....West St., 10th....
There are a several spots on Oahu that you can get good skim at pretty regularly...Yoke's, Sandy's and Waimea Bay to name a few.

Where do you skim? East coast? West coast? What are the conditions that you skim in?
Not knowing much else, I would generically suggest a Hybrid shape board, probably in a LG size. A LG board...
It looks pretty windy....and having skimmed a few times in the wind, not something I'd look forward to doing. If there was no wind, that sider would make it fun and pretty reachable.
I just moved to Boise, ID and brought with me my two boards. One of them is something that you might be interested in. It's a custom board that I ordered from Exile.
Hybrid shape
Double Carbon...
I grew up on Maui and learned how to skim on a Maui Skimmer, so I would say with absolute ease that you can learn on one.
That being said, because they are made of fiberglass I wouldn't recommend...
I always liked the warm water from Mr Zoggs.....it seems to work the best, at least on Maui. It also 'balled' up nicely on the board.

The main one that I ride is a XXL Carbon Hybrid....it's 54.5x21.5 and I love it.
The other one is a custom hybrid...
Try the "search" feature...there are TONS of strings on one-step drops....
I JUST moved to Boise Idaho....not a ton of skimming here, so I won't be there. But yes, Makena is going to be the best place for you to run at. You'll usually see a group of guys skimming...
If it helps any, I too am not of the svelte variety...I am 6'0" 190...and I have two boards from Exile....the one I ride the most is a XXL Hybrid...it's 54.5 x 21.5 Carbon. I had a ML Pro shape...
If you feel like driving, then your next two best options besides Sandy's are going to be Yoke's out on the westside and Waimea on the North Shore.
You can contact Sean at www.skimhawaii.com if you are coming to Maui...he rents boards. Not sure about Oahu....
Anyone have any experience with a McMillan TAC rifle? I am considering picking up a .338 Lapua from them for long-range shots.
As for the one-step drop, I set aside one day where I went down the beach from the rest of the skimmers. I started out at a walking pace, then moved up to a jog, then a slow run and then, finally, a...
What's your height and weight?
To give you an idea, I'm 6'0" 190lbs and I have 2 exiles...they are both Hybrid Carbons....one is 54.5"x21.5" and the other is 56"x22". I primarily ride the XXL...
That drive out to Yoke's is kinda far, isn't it? Looks like you caught it on an ok day....it does get a hell of a lot cleaner than you had it. Glad you had fun..
Somehow this thread went from a skimmer getting into it with a douche on the beach to skimmers getting into it with each other on the internet.
Pure awesomeness.....
Skimming on a major tourist beach means that we get to deal with TONS of tourists who don't really know the etiquette of the beach on a daily basis. That's where a quick conversation helps out. ...
If it was me, I wouldn't waste my money or my time trying to skim on a small woody....
It really won't let you progress very far....because of that, it'd probably turn you away from skimming more...
I'm 6'0" 190lbs and run like a 3-legged Zebra Ice Skating......because of that, I skim on a bigger board. 54.5x21.5, which from Exile is a XXL...
Hope that helps...good luck!!!
