If we're talking about pro purses, everyone should think back a decade. The pro purse for skimmers was definitely bigger.

You must be new to the sport, can't say I'm bummed on your stoke about the sport. Gotta be realistic though. There are 200 times more surfers than skimmers. How many 40 or 50+ year old skimmers do...

Apex made this decision this past May. The new owners of Apex said that they didn't need a team to survive in the skim industry.. Hence the initial "jump ship" back in May by some of the riders.
