if youre going to santa cruz check out 26th street, in san francisco go to baker beach on the north end (but watch out for the nudists). Works best at high tide, not sure how its been working lately.
kind of random, im pretty sure Zumiez started out as a Northern California company, but its tight that they are getting into the skim scene.

yeah i know what your saying about being new, you should find a medium style board like a Vic ultra, or a Sol Pin. Those boards should work pretty good if youre coming off the foamie. Use the foamie...
