Dude running a skim brand in New Zealand did this with some leftover carbon and an old board, except they were quite long and were glued in with epoxy.

If its flat where you skim it might be best to get a Hybrid type board (one that can handle flatland and wave) I reccomend a XL flave.

I happened to be reading the back of the packet wax comes in and it mentioned that you can coat your board in a "basecoat" before waxing it, what does it do? any positive effects?

What I do, except I switch to pumping around 2/3 of the way out to the wave. other wise I find it too hard to turn into a backside wrap in time.

I agree. Smaller sized boards have better maneuverability, the first proper board I got was to big and I was finding it hard to wrap etc.
