View Full Version : newbie technical question
What go on, I have been only skimming for 3 or 4 months. Just really working on my drop going parallel to the water. I have been getting better and my rides are getting longer. Some times I try going straight in to catch a wave and it seems like I really lose a lot of speed when the water gets beyond 6 inches deep. Is there something I should be doing to keep speed til the waves?

Yeah that pretty much answered that... If you're running as fast as you possibly can, maybe try a bigger board but I'd practicing running faster first.

watch videos that helps the most
one thing you can do is side slip witch is when you turn the board 90 degrees and set the trim to where you aren't dragging nor nose diving
a second thing that you can do is pump
but watching videos will help

takes a lot of practice to get your balance good enough so that you can plane across water efficiently. if you put too much weight on your back foot, for example, you're going to push water with the board and lose speed. that's usually the problem for newbies, they don't plane well because they can't keep the board perfectly flat and make adjustments for humpy water. also, getting over the bump transition from sand to deeper water without losing speed is critical.

Avoiding your question, what is the significance of the 808 in your name? Are you from/skim in Hawaii, and if so where?

maybe you are too fat. (meaning maybe your board is to small)
what kind of board do you have?
Mmm... Pasta

It's just time on the board. Once you are one with the board, then you will learn the float.

run. hard. get your drop down so well that you can book it at a wave and get on without thinking. slipping helps, but only if your timing is good

All above is good, but if you still can't reach the waves, try going at high tide!
Wow thanks for all the help. After reading your threads, I think it is a combination of not running fast enough and definitely not keeping the board level. I remember loosing speed while the board was plowing through the water like a boat. I also have a lot of trouble getting to top speed running because I don't really know what to look for timing wise.
If those don't work I'll try pumping and side slipping.
The 808 refers to a bad ass bass drum. I used to make some beats w/a friend of mine.

run fast as hell. put everglide on the bottom. plane out to a wave if its far out. (make the board go side ways) throw the board down instead of just droppin it or throwin it.

also when you get on the board when you drop it you should basically run onto it beacause if you jump onto it you loose alot of your momentem because it is directed more downward than forward.

if you concentrate on running you will be able to run faster than you think you can. Go balls out and don't think about taking the beach to your face

responding to poster above me
im sure running ass out is a good thing but making sure ur skills to get on the board are up to par is more of plus. tryin to running full speed w/o knowin how to get on your board comfortable will result in face plant on hard sand:eek:

also my biggest problem when i started out was that i had to much weight on my front foot pushing the nose down there fore decreasing speed.especially if it was choppy.and if thats your case then just put more weight on your back foot once you get on
