Has anyone noticed that the forums are unusually slow today/yesterday?

It seems to me that they are intermittently slow. One minute they will fast as hell, and then 10 minutes later it will take forever to load a single page...

it's taking a while for my pages to load when usually it used to be uber fast.

hard for me to say, I access it mainly from work and the network sucks here, so it's always slow. But it seems to be normal from home.

I was going to look into it further but now it seems to have been fast as hell for the last couple hours...

Is anyone still having speed problems?

Every now and then like you said it gets slow.

Dont think I didnt see that little database hiccup yesterday either. :D

Aaron Peluso

what database hiccup?

The homepage works perfect now but I am noticing inconstancy in speed with the boards.

RexSkimmer

yeah, some threads would pop up right away and others took like a few minutes

I dont know for sure what was the deal. But yesterday I was on, dont remember the time. But I was on one thread, and pushed the off-topic button, and a message which went something like this came up:

Database Error.

Try using the refresh button on your browser.

This error has been forwarded to the Administration(Linked to Peluso@skimonline.com or something with Peluso in it). If this problem persists contact the administrator.

It was gone within mins though so it wasn't a big deal. I just thought it would be down for hours or days, then I'd have to go find my razorblades again...

Worked fine for me up until this morning, now its taking about a minute to load the page some times, then a few seconds the next.

thanks for all your feedback guys. I am going to try and look into it a little further.

Please keep me informed of ongoing problems/delays.

I havnt had any trouble with the message board, but the media center was crawling yesterday. I couldn't get a lot of the pictures to load. Seems to be working a little better now, but still rather slow.

Aaron Peluso
03-21-2007, 01:03 PM
the media center is lightning fast for me right now, its delay has corresponded to the MB delay from what I can tell.

i seem to get the most delay when clicking on a forum from the main screen. It just took like 30 seconds to load and bring up the skim dicscussion forum.

Yeah, its loading a lot slower today than it has been in a while.

it seems like 7:30 or so in the AM PST it is slow. Later in the day it is fast. Thats what I have been noticeing.

it's super slow right now -- 9:27am . was also super slow earlier, around 8:30am.

if it is a shared server, i wonder if another service or site the server is hosting gets a ton of usage in the morning.

Aaron Peluso
03-23-2007, 04:47 PM
its not shared. I think it has to do with a network bottleneck. the server is clean.

Yeah, it's surging quite a bit - with the submit->wait, it looks like it's getting a lot of queued/differed requests.

That's usually a bottleneck somewhere - if it's a dedicated server, it should be able to handle the level of traffic. Is the DBMS on the server? Or another machine?

I've seen scenarios with fast request handling from the web, but lots of DBMS requests waiting to be processed.

If the DBMS is dedicated and/or on the server (which is also dedicated), then it might be the network - you'd have to inquire about bandwidth at the NOC.

VBulletin is pretty widely used, so I suspect the app layer is fine. It could be resources on the machine too (if it's running everything). You might be getting DB indexes bumped out of memory, and it's taking a long time for lookup (and lots of big text data chunks too).

What is DBMS?

Its a dedicated server and the MySQL is on the server.

I had the hosting company look into it and they said the server looked healthy and that the CPU history was not looking taxed at all. They suspected a networking problem.

I figured that was the case up until this morning when I tried uploading a 10mb movie to the site and then downloading it. The download was lightning fast, which seems to preclude a networking problem.

Now it seems to be a database problem, php problem (?) or most likely a problem with the way the script was transfered to the new server, particularly in terms of references within the script to the old IP address, which is now non-functional.

As to how to troubleshoot that... it seems like its going to be fun.

Update: Going slow for me again.

EDIT: Seems to be going normal speed now.

Sorry, a little nerd-o-licious with the acronyms...

DBMS = DataBase Management System, i.e., the Database (in your case, MySQL)

You could have a network issue that wouldn't show itself with a single large download, but that's not a bad way to start "debugging"

FYI, I just hopped over and did several reloads on the OT area (including clicking down into threads) and it was all SUPER fast now.

Erratic performance does seem to indicate a network issue (assuming you don't have radical load differences throughout the day that would "unbalance" the server). The network backbone, even with a dedicated box, is shared, and a couple of servers on the same wire with a sudden huge spike in concurrent use could tank yours.

Who do you host with Aaron?

recently it's been doing this for me at work. It'll crawl for a few minutes, I mean 30-50 seconds for loading a page, and then it'll be quick 5 mins later.
