Khoi....I'm sure that is a mold for making skimboards, because that's how I made my kevlar/graphite foam skims in the 80's.

The board is 1/2" at its thinnest and 3/4" at its thickest. I haven't weighed it yet, but compared to the carbon Vic the board is sitting on top of in the picture, it feels a bit lighter. When I get a chance to weigh it, I'll post the weight.

I've used the board once so far, but the conditions were way less than admirable and it was my first time out this season. With that said, I was happy with the board. I was getting more distance than I would have expected given my crappy drop, wind, chop, etc. I should get some good time on it later this week.

Cost: I think this would be breaking the rules of the board and I'm not gonna get into details. Suffice it to say that this is not an economically viable alternative to buying a board.

Like I said before... it has several intended purposes. My last board was 1/2" and I loved it. I thought of ways to beef it up some though. First thought was the raised spine down the center. But then that could potentially fuck up traction pad adhesion. So I extended the raised section at the tail of the board. The points were driven more by aesthetics, but I have no doubt that they, too, add strength - think of a corrugated box - curved surfaces do not like to bend.

The board weighs 4.5 lbs, and is very stiff. Compared to my carbon Vic, which weighs about 5.75 lbs and is very soft, I think that's pretty good.

The reason I thought it was a mold is because when we made our molds we did something like you did (but not as cool looking) on the outside of the mold to stiffen it so it would hold it's shape better.

Ahhh... gotcha. There's kinda-sorta a pseudo-mold involved, but if I showed it, I'd be in violation. And not that I don't appreciate molds, but man... I'd hate to have to make one. Plus, without prepregs and an autoclave, they just aren't as effective as other techniques these days. Do you still have any of your molds, or the boards they gave birth to? Pics?

No, when my friend and I split ways he took the molds with him and he just died last year (they don't know why he died) their not sure if it's all the resin he worked with and he worked with a lot (he was a master boat builder). So I don't know what happened to the molds. The thing I didn't like about molded boards was back then rocker and shapes were changing all the time....and you know how hard and how much new molds cost. No pics of the molds only the board that came out of them. Also their not sure if the resins caused my cancer because I didn't always wear a respirator.=(

I was digging though some junk in my shop and found an old stack of Skimboard Mags, back then Tex owned it. In the May/June 1988 there is an ad of mine for a Kevlar/Graphite skimboard. As far as I know, it was the first skimboard to have this. The kevlar was on the bottom, graphite on top and laminated with a modified epoxy. Back then, for some reason, people called "carbon" graphite. The price in 1988 was $225.00 Just thought you might like a little history on composite skimboards.

I'm about to get a boom. Had to custom order one from skimcity since they don't have any smalls with propel bottom. So I figured I'll get blue top with the second art, which is some fish hing and white or orange pads. They have lots of propel art that you can't select from the custom art thing.
