And God spoke unto them, and instructed them to each sacrifice one thing that they held dear, for 40 days and 40 nights. God warned them that it would be mad hard.

I don't really consider myself, "Religious", but I do consider myself a christian. I'm Presbyterian, but have been recently going to a non-denominational church. Anyways, the point being, I don't practice Lent. I believe its only Catholics that do...

soda. in the past i've given up fried foods, soda, caffeine, cookies, meat, whatever i am most addicted to at the time. i can't think of anything this year that i would have a really hard time without, so i'm just gonna go with soda since i'm better off without it anyways. i thought about giving up the internet, but i would lose contact with a great deal of my family and friends that are out of state or on different sleep schedules than i am (i work at night).

edit: i'm not catholic, but i follow this practice anyways as a way of self-improvement.

the point is to give up somthing you enjoy, not stop somthing thats bad for you. this isnt a new years resolution....

Lent is a time when of doing justice to God, justice to one's self and justice to ones neighbor. For some it is an emersion in prayer, fasting, charity or todays the more mainstream idea of penance. It is not simply giving up something because it is bad for you. It is the idea that you give something up because it separates you from God. 40 days symbolizes the time Jesus spent in the wilderness fasting and being tempted by the devil.

yeah. i dont practice lent although ive done davids fast (somewhat of the same thing in the pentecostal church but it also includes fasting). my roommate a couple of years ago gave up cussing which led me to ask "do you enjoy cussing so much that you should give it up to get away from it and closer to god?" it was just weird to me. i think youre supposed to give up something you enjoy, not something you should be giving up anyway.

also zbr, your own quote in your sig? its unprecedented

Fuck that, im not giving up anything just because its a mass celebrated religious time. If i want to give up something i will, but not because some 'institution' tells me too. That would be like celebrating a holiday just because its in a harry potter book or something...

Logan

...if many people drew their beliefs in life from a harry potter book or something, you would have a good point. if you dont believe in the "institution," the holiday isnt really for you anyway. i hope you give up whatever you want to give up whenever you feel like it. lent isnt a time to give up something. its a testing like jesus had when he was wandering; not a health kick backed by god.
