in July. Now Ive never brought my board with me on any other trips but seriously considering it now that Im better at wrapping and bigger waves in general. Im not sure where Ill be staying but will most likely be all over the island (will be there for 10 days.) How is the swell in July... is it considerably flatter? Also, hows the bro factor there? Any specific breaks I should look out for besides whats on the skimonline skim spot page? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

i dont know where you are going but on the strip of hotels area of maui when i went there were barely any waves. The only rideable spot was at the point. Oh and i went during the summer.

the only problem is that they (aaron fuj and crew) mostly skim kauai... which I had the pleasure of meeting when I was there 2 years ago. Im sure theres some skim in maui though.

I don't know what the skim is like on Maui, but as with all of the islands summertime means south swells (usually)

"who you callin a howlie, howlie?"

kaanaplali point could be a good bet but id stay close to makena. Baldwins sometimes has skim. north of the Kaanapali golf club about 15-20 minutes i found skim, i think the place is called napili. (im howlie so spelling may be off a bit, sorry). ive been there 3 times twice in winter and once in the summer. makena never let me down though. its the place where i have been most scared for my life just by standing on the beach. good luck and take photos.

Summer south swells leave a possibility for Makena, Big beach, to be pretty good. The skimonline spot page seems to have the main spots covered, and if you want to know more ask sharkboy on the forums for help (although who knows if he'll give it to you).

Big beach doesn't seem to have much localism because it stretches so far and there are so many people there, and I figure after being to Kauai you should know the general idea of how things work in Hawaii.

Kauai was fucking amazing. Every night I spent time with different locals just drinkin by the beach. I was very suprised at how welcoming they were to me. Nothing but great times in Hawaii.

They would be ambivallent about you...meaning they probably wouldn't care either way. Just don't look like a kook, be patient and respectful, and you will probably be fine.

Being that undertheradar says he's haole and grew up there I'm pretty sure he knows what he's talking about, probably even more so than me. Basically everything he said. Every now and then people will get hassled for no reason, but that seems to be universal and a whole different issue of racism or whatever.
