http://www.dsm.com/en_US/html/hpf/home_dyneema.htm

DSM Dyneema is the inventor and manufacturer of DyneemaŽ, the world's strongest fiber. DyneemaŽ is a superstrong polyethylene fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than quality steel and up to 40% stronger than aramid fibers, both on weight for weight basis. DyneemaŽ floats on water and is extremely durable and resistant to moisture, UV light and chemicals. The applications are therefore more or less unlimited. DyneemaŽ is an important component in ropes, cables and nets in the fishing, shipping and offshore industries. DyneemaŽ is also used in safety gloves for the metalworking industry and in fine yarns for applications in sporting goods and the medical sector. In addition, DyneemaŽ is also used in bullet resistant armor and clothing for police and military personnel.

Dyneema is a superstrong polyethylene fiber produced using a patented gel spinning process. This remarkable fiber is up to 15 times stronger than steel and, weight-for-weight, is 40% stronger than competing aramid fibers. It has high energy absorption and low elongation. Dyneema floats on water, and is extremely resistant to abrasion, moisture, UV rays and chemicals. As a result, it has an almost unlimited range of applications, providing maximum strength and security for minimum weight.

Why wouldn't it be a good choice? It floats on water, UV resistant (unlike carbon), and 40% lighter than aramid fibers...sounds like a good logical choice. Also, seeing as how it's produced in the Netherlands AND here in the US...why wouldn't it be?

I read about it researching for another helmet, and it's used in Shark brand helmets, which are comparative and even lighter than full carbon helmets....

MotoGP racers Alex Barros, Olivier Jacque and Jeremy McWilliams; World Superbike racers Chris Walker, Regis Laconi, Gregorio Lavilla and Troy Corser; World Supersport racers Stephan Chambon and Karl Muggeridge....

There's more: Arnaud Vincent and Randy DePuniet in 250cc; Pablo Nieto in 125cc; David Vuillemin in Motocross. I could go on and on. What do they all have in common? They all wear Shark helmets. Your world class riders don't pick up cheap gear, especially when it's your life on the line, and ESPECIALLY when you can pretty much pick and choose the companies you want to wear.

Funny how people shoot things down without giving it a shot. Might not be the "holy grail"...but don't discount it simply because YOU aren't willing to give it a shot...that's just simple close minded-ness.

Safety standards such as BSI, SNELL, and DOT all test helmets for rigidity, as well as impact cushioning in the event of a crash. Note the two similar qualities to carbon, rigidity, and impact cushioning. Combined with teh fact it floats, could also reduce the amount of foam needed????

That material actually is living up to it's description...in the world of helmets atleast. Shark helmets are lighter than most helmets in thier class, and lighter than even some helmets with HALF the materials (open face helmets). Also lighter than some helmets comprised of aramid/fiberglass and/or carbon...I could say the same things about your boards in comparison....it's all verbage, and it's all useless without real world results to the informed and/or educated...it's not ALL propoganda.

So umm...that's your word, and it's in writing...done deal, now send me my Dyneema Exile. :D

Oicdn, there is a difference between cost benefit. How much work is it going to take to switch how you process the skimboards, how to set up new supply relationships, if the material is in need of new safety measures, etc.. as of now eglass is working out prety fine, so why fix a boat that isn't sinking?

Not to say it isn't an interesting idea though. When you find an article about it from an outside source, post it.

Oh man...

Yes, Oicdin, please teach me about composite materials as I have no idea what I am talkin about because I am uneducated on the subject and shoot things down without giving them a shot.... yeah, thats it.

In actuality, I browsed their site. I did not see the section with their ISO 9000 test data to compare with established materials. All I saw was a bunch of company ad copy. It was nicely written but even in the ad copy there was no mention of some of the most important properties in a skimboard fabric, such as stiffness. Stiffness would be the most important factor in a "replacement for carbon" since stiffness combined with strength is the property that no other material has.

It also doesnt mention cost, not to mention the fact that apparently it isnt even supplied in a form that is usable in a skimboard. But its good if you want to make a fishing net....

And no, the fact that it floats does not mean anything, since thats just a function of weight (how much you use, and how relative strength and stiffness is compared) and volume (how bulky it is). So if it floats more thats only cause its more bulky, and hence probably would soak up a lot more resin, making the board heavier overall...

The properties that make for a good helmet are normally inversely proportional to the properties of carbon (depending on the specifics of the design). So the fact that the material works good in helmets makes me thing that if anything it will work poorly as a carbon substitute in a skimboard.

But thats just my uneducated opinion. I am really just talking out of my ass...

p.s. please notice that I didnt say I would give you a free board with the material, just A board with the material. Hope you didnt do anything you will regret, again.

I didn't say you didn't know anything...I'm just saying, have you ever even considered anything outside the realm of traditional fabrics? Instead of scoughing at the idea of "fixing a boat that already floats", why not try devoting a LITTLE of your resources to finding alternative sources, especially since carbon is on the up and up cost wise. If new ideas were always discounted at the fact of "don't fix what ain't broke" we wouldn't have thing like oh, incadescent light bulbs or low energy appliances. SOMEBODY with the resources played with alternative means and discovered an alternative venue. I mean, who woulda thought a carbon skimboard would actually be better without trying it, without thinking, "well, it'd just be too expensive, etc..."

It also doesnt mention cost, not to mention the fact that apparently it isnt even supplied in a form that is usable in a skimboard. But its good if you want to make a fishing net....

So that's it...no question to even see if they can make it into a woven fabric. They seemed to make gloves just fine... They can make yarn and threads, just like carbon comes in threads on spools that you use for aircrafts (which I may add, know nothing about beyond that point), I wouldn't see why not. Just because the information isn't handed to you doesn't mean it doesn't exist...

Probably right there...I just saw floated. Floats...hmm...just connecting the dots there...ever think it might actually be even SLIGHTLY beneficial if it does infact float like foam? Again, it's all speculation, as evidenced by both our posts, as there's no facts or examples to show it does or doesn't.

The properties that make for a good helmet are normally inversely proportional to the properties of carbon (depending on the specifics of the design). So the fact that the material works good in helmets makes me thing that if anything it will work poorly as a carbon substitute in a skimboard.

Actually, a completely carbon helmet is HORRIBLE for a helmet, it's usually just reinforced or works in conjunction with, as carbon on it's own, shatters on impact. With a mixed composition, THAT is what makes a helmet impact absorbant. i.e. use the carbon for the stiffness, and in addition to the aramid/fiberglass frame/shell.

I never said you didn't know anything. I was simply stating don't discount something for what it's worth until everything is presented or the possibilities have been established. This may not be even feasible for a skimboard, but the only responses I read were:

"don't you think he woulda tried it already"
when it was just "propganda" and wasn't explored any further than browsing the website that really doesn't tell you anything.

"it's too expensive"
When nobody even knows how much the stuff is.

But like Unorthodox said, it would be intresting to see an outside source view on it....and that's what I was getting at if anybody could actually sit and read without jumping the gun on trying to be an intraweb badass, that maybe this is something worth looking into since obviously, everything on here is speculation, with no hard facts to back anything up.

Being a corporation that could possibly use it as a staple composite material, I'm pretty sure they'de have no problem letting you review it or experiment with it's usage with no expense. Again, a side project/curiosity...not a "revamp" or fixing what isn't broke...if it works it works, if it doesn't..well, it doesn't. Never stated IT IS the holy grail....but those of you that pay attention, saw that there were question marks, referencing to a discussion...not a statement.

But I guess not everybody thinks that way eh?

oicdin, your premise that I dont try new things is incorrect. Other than that you seem to agree with everything I said.

I do try new stuff all the time. I just think that companies like lockheed with hundreds if not thousands of materials engineers are going to be ahead of me in terms of adapting new materials to these kinds of processes. So I take my cues from those kinds of companies implementing the new stuff in similar structures, not ropes nets and helmets.

So far that material is apprently not used at all in the kind of construction used in skimboards. There is a reason. I am not sure what excactly that reason is, but it is clear that they are not marketing it for laminate applications. i.e. they dont offer a fabric for that purpose with proper binders etc... its not even offered. Thats what is funny about your original post. Even they arent claiming that its a possible alternative for carbon in a laminate...

p.s. carbon is not neessary at all in helmets as best I can tell. Any implementation of the material in that application is for consumer appeal and little else.

just because an object floats doesnt mean its good for water based aplications.
the two materials come in different compounds, different shape.
By reading the article, you can form that it isnt a very stiff material.
You dont need stiffnest for fish nets, nor police protection

Do you realize the extra cost it would be to invest in the new material?

the extra cost, with the already higher-price then normal skimboards (Due to the foam company), would just kill the market.

Yes Aaron is right, the page is just another advertising scheme.
It isnt from a 3rd party source, and is glorified to make its product look good.

Just like you see on all skimboard websites, declaring that their product is absolutely the shizznite.

just my 2 cents, from a person who doesnt really know anything about skimboarding

i find this pretty funny, for two reasons:

1. i have read every post in this thread and haven't been able to find an example of anyone trying to impress anyone, with one exception, which brings me to reason 2.....

2. the only person who tried to impress anyone was oicdn, by posting those pics of the chick he supposedly "fucked in the ass," whether he fucked her in the ass or never laid a hand on her other then in that one picture, it is still completely retarded to post a bunch of pictures of some hot chick and tell everyone you had sex with her in a thread where it is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, especially considering it is a topic that he is arguing over and repeatedly being shut-down on

in all likelihood, sure, it is possible that you fucked her oicdn, lord knows funnier looking dudes have fucked hotter chicks, but throwing those pics in this thread out of nowhere is just begging for everyone to call you out on it, it's about as credible as me saying i just fucked this chick in the ass last night:

keep in mind this Doctor Delicious is the same guy who used to have a headshot in his avatar with the caption "Damn I'm handsome", and regularly talks about how hot he is. Sounds to me like birds of a feather flock together.

Whoa whoa whoa. You're saying Dr. Delicious is a dude?! I assume he was a girl. So that means when he implied earlier that he was "penetrated" by OICDN he was really saying he got deep anal.

Wow. Just wow. Smooth OICDN.

I wonder if any of guys even skimboard, all you do all day is make fun of eachother, i dont know why you dont just have sex quit flirting/ trying to impress eachother.
actually i think alot of these guys on here can skim way better than you, and who is trying to impress someone other than that guy posting suposably his girlfriend pics.
