When do you guys start running for the wave? I know i sound stupid but when ever i go for a wave its luck if i actually reach it before it breaks. So when should i start running for it?

right after the wave before it breaks.

I saw a ton of people have this problem at Vilano today (then again it was hard to reach in general). This is more of wave calling than anything. I know I can see where an A-frame will form when it's like 50 yards out, so I get ready. I run as soon as I can see there will be a good place to drop, either wet sand or thin rushing water. I'd say calling waves is a lot more skill than most people think.

timing is the hardest part of skimming imo, especially in hard to reach situations where your window is very small

yes, i totally agree that timing is one of the hardest things to learn!!!! look for waves forming dont wait till it looks like its about to break... so run when its forming and you should hit it right before the wave breaks!

yeah, it's hella hard. I think it's even harder with bad eyesight, like me. I was at Sandy Beach in hawaii, trying to skim waves for the first time, and I was just getting owned by the waves all day.

go while the water is coming towards you. step 1 explains it better: http://www.skimonline.com/skimschool/skimming_201/

Even though this thread is over 3 years old.....it is a good question. For me anyway, getting there at the right time is the hardest part of skimboarding. I think it's even harder than surfing, because with surfing you're paddling with the wave, but skimboarding you're running at the wave and the wave is coming toward you.

truth, if someone else, more expirienced, is getting to waves, try to time the wave like them.... dont snake them though
