View Full Version : Drops (one step, two step, no step)

Everyone... describe your drop. I personally 2-step to my front foot, goofy.

To anyone with questions, chasing your board is not good. If you can get on in 2 steps or less (basically run on, not jump on) you can maintain much needed speed to get to the wave.

Since I've only been skimming for a little over a month, I still chase my board. I find it really difficult (and dangerous) to get on any sooner, but I am trying. Are there any tips on how to improve, other than obviously practicing? Perhaps running slower or bending down lower will help?

slow down, get your form down and naturally speed up. time is your friend

the main goal is to get on as quick as you see fit without losing speed. if you want to work on this, you're going to have to look like the six year old boy from england with his woody from the local surfshop - just slightly jog on the wet sand and work on dropping, stepping on. drop and step on. keep doing it until it becomes habit and gradually work up speed.

just try getting on faster. even though you will fall it will take time. everything you do takes time to learn how to do. like it took you time to learn how to get on your board without falling. just use the same speed you have been using i guess. just drop the board down insted of sliding it.

i do a 2 step drop. or 1. and get on with my front foot first.

kcskimkid
05-18-2006, 09:13 AM
yeah i used to get on first with my front foot but it lead to many days of pulled groin muscles or strained. that forced me to get on with my back.

Great tips. Thanks guys. Now I saw a skimboarder hold his board with both hands on the sides near the bottom and kind of "plop" it down before he one-stepped. Should I try this, or should I be holding it like I've been told (one hand near the bottom, other near the middle)? I'm still finding it difficult to get my board down on a windy day (even loaded with sand), expecially since I've got an Exile...they're so light compared to Zaps.

hold it like youve been told. one hand near bottom and one near middle. and dont PLOP it down, THROW it down straight in front of you.

just slam it down in front of you whileyour running and run onto it. if its windy kick wet sand on the bottom of your board. it will help it from blowing away

It really depends on the beach. If your on a flat ass beach where you have to kind of jump up the wash to get to the waves, front foot first is better ( in my opinion of course). But if you have a hill and the waves are 2 feet away, speed dont really matter.

I use 2 ways for getting on my board:

1: I throw by board with my right hand, make 1 step, and than front foot first.

2: I throw my board with my left hand, make 1 step, and than back foot first.

I skim goofy. The first way is how i learned it first, but than i always start spinning (especially when i don't want that). Right now i'm trying to use the second way, than i don't spin, but i still have to work on my speed.

since the waves were dissapointing today and the flatness wasn't.. today i tried to learn using fewer steps before i skim... i managed to get 3 to 4 steps in on a average and i can already feel the difference of the power... aimin for one or two steps tommorrow, and better waves.

48.5 steps into a fat face plant into the fucking ground. I don't play around, I skim hard.

Then when I feel like being a kook I one step, front foot first, goofy. Works good for me. I'll learn back foot eventually for shits and giggles. I've even got a decent water drop down with front foot first and I'm slowly speeding it up as I get more comfortable with it, and water dropping fff is pretty crazy.

no step for me.. It took me 2 weeks straight practice at Aliso last spring but i got it. Try to learn water dropping first.. once a waves crashes drop and step on to the board-- hurts less when you fall too :D

Newby- Practice on grass or carpet. Start real slow and get the motion of the one step down, then start it at the beach slowly until you get it down. Everyone has their preference, but even though front foot first was easier for me starting out, back foot first is a much better way to get on (groin pulls suck).

To the guy who asked about tips in the wind (this is for onshore wind), when I drop rather than throwing it down flat, I try to let the nose go down first (let the wind push it down), and as it goes down use your back hand to push the tail down to level it out. Basically, anything to keep the wind from getting under the board.

Hope it helps,

Mark

*chuckle* Thanks Frank, I try.

OH yeah, and if yal wanna know a really easy way to learn how to one step. Make a heavy ass wooden board (trace your skimboard and cut it out of wood) and practice your one step with that first. You dont even have to do it in the water. I actually learned how to drop in the grass in my back yard. Anyways, the heavy board will make you learn to push forward that extra little bit just as you get on the board, This gives you a lot more speed. This is how I learned: And if you don't get what im saying, look one-stepping up in the dictionary.

You can control the spin by dragging a hand in the water. If you are spinning to the right (front-side for goofy) drag the left. drag the right hand if you are rotating in the opposite direction. Also, the slight rotation, to the right, can help with moving into a planing position... aka side-slipping.

I drop: goofy, one-step-cross-drop, front foot first.

No STep...honestly. Learning a good drop, all it takes, is somebody to stop and show you for like 30 minutes. Let you do drop, critique you, and repeat.

If you can, put some slick on the bottom of your board, and make that session a sand skimming session. I learned how to no step and get my speed back up to where it was just by having somebody critque me and tell me what I'm doing wrong, and show me what to do right. It's ALOT easier than learning it on your own.....

AerialSkimmerBrad
05-23-2006, 12:51 PM
I learned it on my own for the 2 step and every once in a while the one step from watching other skimmers, Im really good on watching what other skimmers do good and copying them, thats the same with my wave riding as well. I really focus on things that others do as well.. with teaching others they dont really seem to comprehend that, I dont know if it's that I want it more or if they want it less. I do have a can of the Bowling Alley Wax here, I guess I should start using it more often, Ive only used it once..

i drop no step or one stepwhen i need to get on my board fast, i used to sand skim so i can do the million step drop. it's easy for me though because i can ride goofy, or normal(is that weird?) which ever one is easiest at the time.
i improved by jumping on my board and sliding on the carpet when i couldn't go to the beach, you can also practice shove its on carpet..... just make sure you have enough room
