View Full Version : Two Questions: Pumping While On a Wave and Backside 360 Air

I've gotten way better over the last few months, but there's always something I want to work on.
One thing I don't get is pumping while on a wave. I see it in videos and also occasionally in real life. When I almost have the wave, I try this, but I end up accelerating the board's sinking instead of accomplishing anything. There was a guy the other day who totally schooled me with this and caught almost every wave, while I only caught the few that were über-powerful.
Another thing is the backside 360 air. I saw John Akerman's video of the inverted backside 360 air, and it looks like he's almost going into a backside wrap before launching off the wave and completing the spin. I tried this, but I either end up doing a fly away or just spinning on the water like a failed wrap. Is it my timing?
Thanks in advance.

I'm learning a backside 360 at the moment as well..With backside 180s I usually don't drag my hand, but with 360s it seems to help when I drag my back hand before I hit the wave..Then I give a little pop and look towards my back foot once I have my rotation spinning..I'm just doing it the way I've seen it done, and they suck at the moment..hopefully they'll get a lot better and more consistent as I continue to do them..good luck though, it's a sick trick for sure

Draging your hand will only slow u down. U need as much speed as possible to pull it. Either you can do a full rotation in air set up by your ollie with a slight turn( the speed will carry you around ) or do them like Cory Lopez does with more of a turn then Ollie & a rotation. He also seems to use the whitewater to bring back around the air.
Need to be watching the old Lost videos. Corey & Wardo have them dailed in

a quick little slash with your hand will only help you spin. if your going for a 360 air you should have some extra speed to spare anyway...

2:14 is what I'm talking about..not a drawn out hand drag but just a little something to get you turning, almost like a demon spin..at least thats how I've seen a lot of people do them

Waves have been trash for the last few days. I haven't been able to get enough of a pop to do anything. I'm gonna try it out when there's more than a shin-high shore break.

Also make sure your back foot is as far back as possible, this will help you get some pop. You will find that it helps keep your feet on the board while you are in the air too. but other then that, speed and timing your pop are also huge factors. Hope the waves get better for you and best of luck!
