Why do you skimboard? and why do you invest so much time into it?

Well for me, my brother got me into it and even though its not that big around here. For the people in the area im good at it. And its a totally separate group of friends where age dosnt matter and who you hang out with outside dosnt just skimboarding. We discuss outside things but even still its a common group of people that have enjoyable ideas.
I also always love a challenge and with the release of new skim dvds and online videos there is always something someone is better at and I like to try it and get better. There is a lot of competition in the sport and I like that.
Also I got good at it very fast and I pour and invest so much money in it mostly because its fun. What makes it fun? around here doing the biggest thing on the smallest of waves around the world. And then people seeing you do it. Its fun because of audiences and the group of skimmers who push you. Its a constant push from other people.
Around here we have a group of elite skimmers who have been around "forever" and then we have the newbs like me and some others and some newbs who have been accepted into this group of people.
Its a great atmosphere with places like this and Its fun and thats why I skim.

What about you?

1337 $k!)v(3|2z?????!!!!!! THEY ARE ELITE??? Are they X-treme critical boarder dudes who get inside of tunnels all day long to? They must be pretty radical and tubular!

I skim because I'm gay, lots of gays in skimboarding, totally my scene. Plus a sport that has it's central message boards full of people who call each other kooks and jotos is pretty gnar. End of story.

i skim because I like the feeling of hitting a wave frontside and knowing that my fate lies in the confidence of my heel holding it's edge. Backside sometimes too.

Thats actually a good question, one i ask myself sometimes...like when its freezing out and im getting my ass kicked by waves. Anyway around my area skimming is pretty big, the beach is really big. Alot of people i know are at the beach and alot of my friends skimmed before i did and i just sorta picked it up and haven't looked back. As for putting money into the sport, i just dropped $510 into a Slotstik pro vac carbon and beaker pads :D

I'm addicted. There are random things in my life that I can pick up quickly, unfortunately not swimming, but surprisingly it was a water sport. After just trying it out, I didn't stop. My best friend who was skimming with me stopped, but I met an older skimmer and then saw the SCskim.com guys and really progressed from there. I like it. I like the speed, the feeling of water moving all around me and stuff. Especially cause I wasn't very into water related things before...

haha.........skimboarding is a pretty cheap sport. Boards might be expensive (in some peoples eyes).......but then what is the ongoing cost.....sunscreen?

What are you pouring/investing money into?

skimboarding is expensive sometimes but i like how my skimboard is just a board and not much can go wrong with it... but if i go on a bike ride theres so many things that could wrong... thats one of my reasons i like skimboarding... other than that, i love putting use to waves.

My sisters ex-boyfriend used to skim when he wasnt surfing, and got me into skimming when I was a young teen. After that I sand-skimmed for a few years until I got myself an Exile Carbon... since then Ive been nuts about skimming. Every day I check the cams/weather websites constantly even when I know Im not skimming that day.

My love for skimboarding is made up of a combination of things: I love the ocean/beach... Always have and always will. I also love the feel of riding waves, its a great feeling just gliding on water. I also love the feeling of satisfaction after a good wrap or line. Its also great cardio exercise.

It's something I just love, I may not be good at it, but I love seeing myself progress, all the scrapes and cuts I endure are just minor things to me. I love the thrill of it though, I just do.

some reasons I tend to skim more than surf:

I like the fast-paced nature of it
I like the excercise
I like being able to do it in boardshorts when the water's cold
I like impressing tourists (yeah, I'll admit it)
I like being able to see the hotties walk by

but when the surf's good and the water's warm, the skimboard stays in the car.

Honestly, who doesnt? One of the greatest things is having a group of 10 people just standing behind you in awe. Ive skimmed in front of many family parties... its great to have drunk people come up and completely bug out even when you just do something non-technical out the back.

Anyone skim in front of a family party/wedding party? The people are real chill, you sometimes get free food/drinks, and theres always a DJ playing. Its everything you need right behind you while you skim.

I skim for the fun of it really... its a challenge... and I like the warrior mindfulness that comes with it... there is just something about being on the beach and being super aware... and also being aware of whats going on on the coast on any given day... being one with the tides and the hunt for skim is fun too... I love being impecable... there is always more to learn with this sport and the more I do it the better I feel.... plus its good exercise.... every time I am in the ocean I feel like I get clean... its different from a shower feeling... chilling with Grandmother ocean is the best...

i have a hard time explaining why i love skimming so much to non-skimmers, i think kai hayes said it best in the foreverskim interview, something like "it's that feeling of being in control but not being in control"

and of course there's all the other factors, i love the beach, it's a fun way to get exercise, and i love the core vibe in skimboarding

i agree with it being hard. it was fun sand skimming for a while because of just the gliding and speed but i saw one kid do a one step and skim out to a wave and wrap and it was all over from there. ive been trying to learn to one step for a while now. i got the motion down but im working on speed and trust me i have paid my dues to the sand and shells in the process. but knowing im getting closer to being to able to get out and wrap a wave is awesome. it never gets old and like mentioned above, the fact thats is hard is a challenge and takes a lot of work but once there, amazing

i started for no reason. i got 100 bucks for my 10th birthday and just for the heck of it spent it all down to the last penny on a zap bat. oregon, so no tax, so literally like 100 bucks flat. haha. then i spent like 2 months just getting the run and step down on a flat sandy lakeshore, with my dad driving the boat by for waves. and then as soon as i got home i discovered skimonline, realized there were waves to ride and how much more fun it could get, and i think my dad took me to laguna first thing. and since i'd seen the pros and the spots online, i saw people and skimmed with them, talked to them, and just realized how close knit it was, and i was just having fun.

now its just that squirrely feeling of you floating on water that makes me want to shout.

man i love it.

i skim because its wicked fun you can screw around with it fewer reefs to worry about than surfing no sharks lets me exercise everything without thinking about it as exercise and currents are less of a problem or scare factor
