I have always wanted to get into skimboarding and just never had the chance. However now that I have finshed school and work a normal 9 to 5 I suddenly have tons of time to spare.
The other catch is that I live and work in Toronto, Ontario
so how old is too old to learn to skimboard? I'm not really interested in the flatland stuff so is there any point?

Well if you started flatland it may help as a little experience if you went on vacation to the ocean some time. Flatland really isn't that bad...

Thanks guys, thats what i was hoping to hear!
you have probably heard this a hundred times (i did search the forums and could not find an answer) but is there a board that i could do both waves and some flatland on?
I was originally looking at getting a victoria foamy, but just saw all the positive reviews and mentions of the jgordon boards

As far as I know, my wood boards are the only one that can ride waves and is strong enough to ride rails too. Don't ride rails with a foam skim, it will destroy it.

You're only as old as you feel. The secret of staying young is to keep doing sports./

any board is good for flatland. but not necessarily for rails and waves. just pick a wave riding board and dont do railz.

If you haven't given it a shot than there is plenty of point. If its not for you than you'll know cuz you gave it a shot.

All of the worth 1000 pictures are photoshopped, this is a known fact..... sorry to burst your bubble
the clear give away would be how dry the old man is, but if you are full retard the other give away is which way the board is leaning, and if you are full full full retard, who surfs in sandals?
Never go full retard

thats probably very good advice, and I think i'll start.
what are common skimboarding injuries? i would assume wrists and ankles take alot of punishment

I don't think wrists too much, but yeah definitely the legs and ankles. I've seen alot of strained/pulled muscles in the groin muscle and rectus femoris (upper quad) from sprinting or running.
And yeah if you aren't planning on hitting rails flatland just get an ocean board. Plus it'll float and skim more if where you are skimming isn't ideally shallow.

hamstrings, calves, wrists if you fall, knees, quads, stupid bruises that hurt for 2 minutes when your board hits you. Stretching is a must.

Yea i guess the colder water doesnt help with preventing pulled muscles.
to be totally honest i'm not entirely sure where I will be skimming. I live in southern ontario so lake ontario, or any other of the great lakes would be the only ones with waves, any of the others will just be flat but get deep fairly quick. Would an ocean board still make sense?

Ocean boards seem to always run more expensive than flatland just purely because of the materials they are made out of. So I guess it depends on how much you want to spend...Ocean boards ding easily, flatland boards don't (if it's made of wood).
Oh and if you search around for a sandy stream that can be great flatland skimming.
How big are the waves? On Lake Michigan the waves get big when it's super windy, and even then its hard to wrap the wave because the waves are so close to each other and only like 2-3 feet tall.

Yea the dinging issue is something i'm worried about, so its why i'm thinking about getting the jgordon retro-fish or the victoria foamy (plastic bottom)
i believe that lake ontario behaves alot like lake michigan, the waves only really get big when its windy and they aren't very tall
not sure about how close together they are tho

if the coast is short like here with a steeper incline i would expect to be skimmin more flats, its still fun, but flatland much more enjoyable
and do you or friends have a boat?

Senior/Masters division for most contests is 25+. I'm going on 27 this month and skimming definitely hurts more the older I get, but there's no reason you can't learn and continue doing it for a while. Also, stretching is just something you should do any ways, whether you're skimming, working out, whatever or not. It's just good for you and if you don't do it, you will hurt yourself eventually. Oh yeah, I just learned to skate a mini-ramp a couple of months ago, that hurt (and still does) a lot more than skimming. As long as you're an athletic person it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm 38 and skim several times a week...and one of the guys I skim with is 40. Yup, we do sit around and talk about the old school days sometimes, but we are at least still out there. To me, it's more of a mentality...I remember my Dad being 38 and thinking "Gawd DAMN, he's old!" but he also didn't really do anything sports related...whereas I skim, play soccer and drink Heineken's competitively.

i'll be 45 in nov and skimmed aliso for 5 hrs yesterday with my 16 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter. just bought her her first foam vic sled yesterday from the shop and she was so happy (thanks matt)!
my lower back is killing me now but i'll be back at it monday.
i can't make it way out there like brandon and chia and matt were doing effortlessly yesterday, but before they got there i was gliding/pumping out over the first wave of the big high tide sets and then bodysurfing in on the second or 3rd wave to sidestep the no fins/no bodysurfing lifeguard rule when it's big like that.
i still LOVE skimming
