13 of the 14 full time lifeguards have a salary over 100k, 2 of them make over 200k

so now that everyone thinks you're a fool, you're going to try and change your stance to act like you think the lifeguards are underpaid?

Michael Fk
05-11-2011, 10:25 AM
i didnt originally have a stance on the subject except for i thought it was a lot for a lifeguard in general to be paid but as far as this being a dream job... id rather have a higher income and not have to save lives at wedge.

youve been spending a decent amount of time in every thread ive made/things ive posted trying to make me look less intelligent than any other user on somb :[. fuckin internet bully... but if you dont wanna have to keep waiting for me to make my foolish posts/threads you can just pm me and you can just insult me directly

I personally think this would be an amazing job but I guess everyone has their opinion. My Dad is a firefighter and several guys working with him were Huntington beach lifeguards before they got on the fire department and they said it was the best job ever.

the major factor in social class by income is location. 100k is doing well by anyones standards, but the cost of living in newport, along with all of oc and the majority of coastal california would cut 100k down faster than youd think. not to mention that being the main source of income in supporting a family... and taxes...

Full time lifeguarding fucking sucks. The full timers that I work with say it drives you insane, especially during the winter when few people are on the beach. Not to mention they all are looking like they have solid shots for skin cancer and bachelor status for the rest of their lives (although I'm sure a 100k salary in California would help that better than the $25k you get here in Florida).

This. http://www.worldwidelearn.com/education-articles/degrees-making-money.html

Few people dream of spending their entire professional lives selling cheeseburgers. If you want a top-tier career, you have to invest in the right college degree. Take a look at our list of some of the top degrees that can prepare you to rake in the bucks. We also list the median salaries enjoyed by professionals in these fields, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Medicine $145,600
All those years in medical school pay off: doctors and surgeons make one of the highest incomes in any industry. Nurses and healthcare administrators don't do too poorly either.
2
Dentistry $132,140
Plenty of baby-boomer dentists should retire within the next decade, freeing up hiring opportunities for newly minted dentists. Dental Assistants also make very high salaries with minimal training required.
3
Law $102,470
Put your silver tongue to good use by attending law school. In addition to formal coursework, your law school may give you practice in supervised mock trials.
4
Pharmacy $94,520
In addition to working at retail drugstores, many pharmacists find jobs with mental health centers, nursing homes, and family clinics. You can start out as a pharmacy tech.
5
Physician Assistant $74,980
With a bachelor's degree, you can gain enough career training in just two years to become a physician's assistant.
6
Software Engineering $79,780
(Applications Software)

$85,370
(Systems Software)
Listen up, computer nerds: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects an enormous 38 percent job increase in software engineering within the next decade.
7
Master's in Business Administration (MBA) $63,000
to
$80,000
According to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AAACB), over 74 percent of MBA graduates work as managers.
8
Education Administration $77,740
Educational administrators ensure both students' academic success and teachers' job satisfaction. Remember, many administration jobs require advanced degrees.
9
Construction Management $73,700
Plenty of colleges offer bachelor's degrees in construction-related fields, and roughly 60 schools have graduate programs in construction management.
10
Veterinary Science $71,990
The BLS reports that job opportunities for veterinarians should be especially strong in feline medicine.
11
Finance $66,590
(Analysts)

$66,120
(Personal Advisors)
You can boost your hiring potential in this competitive field through career training in finance, statistics, or mathematics.
12
Art Direction $68,100
Who says that artists have to starve? Not only do art directors make respectable incomes, they can expect fast job growth in the next decade.
13
Computer Systems Analysis $69,740
Computer systems analysts can quickly solve companies' computer problems, from networking glitches to viruses.
14
Civil Engineering $68,600
Due to common ground in engineering disciplines, certified civil engineers may also choose to explore mechanical engineering or electrical engineering.
15
Industrial Engineering $68,620
From hospitals to factories, industrial engineers help streamline diverse businesses. During industrial engineering school, you can take courses in statistics, engineering writing, and business analysis.
16
Computer Programming $65,610
Brush up on Java and C++ by earning a certificate, bachelor's degree, or master's degree in computer programming.
17
Sales Management $65,510
If you're a salesperson looking for career advancement, consider studying sales management. Your employer may even offer free on-site management training.

So three of the top "Money Making Degrees" average over $100k according the the gov't agency in charge of keeping track of things like that. That means you could easily go to college for four-six years, get one of the best possible degrees and still not be likely to make over $100k. My dad is a senior IRS special investigator with 30 years experience and he barely makes over $100k. You need to wake up kid. Everyone in high school thinks they are gonna make a shit load of money when they grow up. 100k is a lot of money everywhere if you ask me. It says right in the article you link to that the average income in OC is $71,735 and you have to assume that figure is getting pushed up quite a bit by the large amount of people who live in that area that make millions a year.

Well I think most of us assumed that the guys making 100k+ arent the bros you see the towers at the beach. Its just that these guys probably never went to college or if they did, they probably majored in something trivial and now are making a lot of money with a kickass retirement plan.

I hear you. I am not even arguing for them, just providing some balance. I am not sure college is relevant. You could have them go to college but not be better lifeguards. So what...?

It is important to understand that the numbers are total compensation. That includes insurance and retirement, which are often over 30k of the package.

The one who makes over 200k... he would be something like the CEO of a 250+ person company.

All of that is what it is. My problem is when it breaks down into a union type situation where there is no competitive pricing/competition for the services rendered.... I cant tell looking at the numbers if those amounts are too high. I dont know what the schedule is. What the quality of life is. What it took to get to that position. What experience and education is necessary....?

But I do know that more competition for the jobs would lead to more effective utilization of tax dollars. It sounds to me like there are others who would do those same jobs for less, but they cant get in. Thats the problem.

The retirement benefits sound ridiculous.

Utah
05-12-2011, 03:32 PM
^^^This^^^ = unions suck. I'm a non-union "site supernintendo" ordering around union operators that make over $100k a year... IF they are working 90% of the year. I've been offered a union book in Long Island due to an extended job out there and my display of knowledge / hardwork during that job but besides working with / union running in the family / close family friend it is impossible to get into.

Pelusoooooooo you'd love the job I'm on. Total waste of tax dollars as the project is 95% federally funded and is totally pointless. Con-Ed (large energy provider, not sure if they are on the West Coast) has had about 20 guys onsite the entire week... just sitting. They can't use these bolts, they cant use that backflow preventer, they can't use a crescent wrench on that... overtime because some guy did something on purpose to create 2hrs overtime for 15+ union guys. This is just for utility relocation so the project can continue... not even real work on the project.

And people wonder why this country is fucked up!!

In relation to what Silky said, I personally know dozens of attorneys who work for the state at the Public Defenders office who make under 40K per year. These are people graduating law school with 150K in student loans...

Aaron Peluso

Michael Fk
05-12-2011, 06:18 PM
I was referring to 100k being a low number as far as what a dream job would be if you look at that original post...

Im aware 100k is a larger number than kids see it to be, mostly because the media portrays celebrities, musicians, etc. having a bankroll well above that. And those are the jobs kids aspire to have before they realize the actual job availability in the world.

Silky I checked that info.. pretty shocking but I learned last year that something like the top 2% of the U.S. population holds 10% of our wealth. I'm guessing that 2% lies mostly in entertainment, or individuals sitting far up in corporate business.

I've been raised in areas where there are a lot more mercedes on the streets than 90s hondas, so my view is pretty jaded but my parents have done a decent job educating me on what the real world is like, whether or not im biased to the lifestyle/environment ive been raised in.

AP.. word up, I didnt take into consideration that they were managing 200+. our beaches are divided into 4 sections and I think there's 2 head honchos in each "city" (5 miles), with the fourth not even having public lifeguards.

$ilky $kim
05-12-2011, 09:23 PM
Those numbers $ilky $kim posted also do not reflect the time put in weekly or the stress the job will cause. As pointed out above by Pelusoooooo, managing 200+ teenagers is more of a management issue... and quite a stressful one at that. If someone drowns it is ultimately on the "managements" shoulders. Then again Pelusoooooo can't find a cat under a rock so what does he know :D  :D

My dentist seems to go on vacation every 2 weeks and he seems to be a chill and relaxed guy. On the other hand the construction managers I work with I see maybe 3 hours out of a week on a project, spend most of their days in a dusty trailer, almost always have to work Mon-Fri all 12 hour days, and are almost always grumpy/angry. When shit hits the fan they basically have the project owners holding a gun to their head. I've been offered a management position with various contractors / gvmt agencies and have declined for these reasons.

No, I didn't post that to bash the life guards, just as a reality check to 100k nor being a lot of money. I understand the people who are making 100k being lifeguards are the supervisors to the supervisors. OC probably has the most dangerous beaches in America due to waves and currents in that area, not to mention idiots that walk on the jetties or body surf the Wedge. It's the kind of place where experienced swimmers die from time to time and I wouldn't want that job. 40 hours a week being responsible for the safety of everyone on the beach in an area where any moment a sneaker wave could come and pull a handful of kids in deep and is notorious for rip currents? Not me.
