It is impossible and I was told by a dj-friend early on not to worry about it for the most part. although training with that definitely helpsyou out A LOT. eventually it'll come naturally (more or less)

I dj differently than most though. I like going in with little or no plan. General outline and just winging it. on the fly is theo nly way I can. now I do have playlists to guide me or I get pissed because theres certain songs I never think of in the heat of the moment.

also here is my latest house track I posted on fb a while back, I feel like this one is good enough to post here:

not really in the genre of what normally goes in here, but whatever, crystal castles are fracking awesome and this remix is pretty good. health made this one so dark and eery, i love it. i don't know if i like it as much as the original, but it has a totally different feel (to me) so it's hard to compare.

Always hated Henry Rollins, this just shows further how much of a retard he is. He even admits to being over the hill. He talks about going to music festivals and making fun of the DJs there because they play other people's records. He has no idea that producers DJ their own material live nowadays.

Where do you guys find new music? I'm in a DnB and Dubstep mood lately, and I'm just looking for the best places to either download really good mixes or stream good mixes.

I've been looking at people's soundclouds a lot. Skream and Benga both update their stuff a lot, so that's a starting point if you're looking for some OG UK Bass. I've been listening to BBC radio shows a lot, mainly Pete Tong and Annie Mac (they play mainly house and electro, lots of dubstep too though).

The best thing out there IMO are the BBC essential mixes on Pete Tong's show. Basically he just invites the best DJs to come play their own 1-2 hour set on the show. Some amazing dubsteppers have been on there:

Nero: http://soundcloud.com/das-boy/2010-11-13-essential-mix-nero
Netsky: http://soundcloud.com/das-boy/2010-10-09-essential-mix-netsky
Doorly: http://soundcloud.com/das-boy/2010-09-18-essential-mix-doorly
Baement Jaxx: http://soundcloud.com/das-boy/2010-10-23-essential-mix-basement-jaxx

Here's Wolfgang's if you're feeling electro-y: http://soundcloud.com/das-boy/2010-11-06-essential-mix-wolfgang-gartner

And Pendulum because, well because legendary: http://soundcloud.com/das-boy/2010-07-17-essential-mix-pendulum

Funny you mention Pendulum. This vid I'm bout to post is a few years old but it's one i always watch to get pumped for a parkour session and hence I associate the song itself with getting pumped. But I didn't know the song, so the other day in the car I went youtube > mp3, played the mp3 through my car stereo while running soundhound, to find out that it was Pendulum - Plastic World. I'd never heard of Pendulum and now 2 days later I've probably seen the name pop up half a dozen times.

ZapBulletRider
03-22-2012, 08:28 AM
Yeah the only Netsky I'd heard was his remix of Rusko's "Everyday", which is sick and it's a drumstep track, so I was pretty much expecting it to be DnB.

WSMassiv
03-22-2012, 08:38 AM
I think he's like Nero, in that he started out in D&B but tried out dubstep once Rusko, Skream, etc started making dubstep popular. I think he still does much more drumstep/D&B stuff though.

and good call on the 'Everyday' remix that song is great

yes been watching since yesterday wanting to end my life. my friend lives in miami I easily could have gone and had a spot to crash. whatever. Mord Fustang killed it earlier, as did Zedd. I found a desktop app called Airfoil that lets you broadcast the audio from your comp to other clients, and there's an app for the phone called AirBubble that lets you receive. I had never heard Avicii and didn't think he was that bad, for some reason I had the expectation that I wouldn't like his set so maybe it's just that it was better than I expected.

My favorite thing about this feed is how ridiculous the comments get. It doesn't matter who's on stage, every 2 minutes you'll see "Skrillex is killing it right now!"

Haha I just clicked back to it and the most recent comment was "why don't I see Skrillex on my screen?"

WSMassiv
03-25-2012, 11:48 AM
yeah I like avicii's stuff, he just didn't do alot of mixing, mainly crossfader smashing. so far from what I've seen, mord fustang was doing the most live mixing. he was playing off the beatpad and doing tons of effects

the only levels i thoroughly enjoyed was the one avicii played mashed up with somebody i used to know. then guetta played the exact same fracking song the next night and it blew dicks. so i dont know if i was still on my hype train after justice or what. but, yea, so many levels of levels. we were also only seeing the main stage and headliners though, so that probably had a lot to do with it.

did anyone else catch fedde's set? i thought that shit was sick.

best thing i saw was during armin van buuren's ASOT stage set and he played this song:

I wish someone had played real, OG dubstep for me when I first heard about dubstep. I'm only just now (as of last weekend) discovering real dubstep. I've grown to like the better brostep out there but for me it's an acquired taste and it took me a while to come around. I think if I'd heard some of the early stuff off the bat I would have immediately liked it b/c I'm such a fan of old 70's dub and those early dubstep producers drew heavily on that sound. Lots of space in the mix which I really like. I remembered making some comments about dubstep a while ago so I tracked them down, pretty funny reading them now, circa late 2010:

I have been meaning to look into dubstep because I love dub ( esp o.g. Dub like Lee Scratch Perry), and I see dubstep pimped like crazy these days. I like a lot of different genres of music, and I love a lot of electronic subgenres, but I have to say everything posted in this thread was horrible. I'm gonna give it about 15 mins of searching and if I don't find something impressive it's going in the garbage bin with autotuned rap/r&b and country.

----

Pandora'ing now... the problem I have with it is it's too gimmicky, it sounds like it's made for a racing movie or Mortal Kombat or something. Like the best songs i've heard so far, 2/3 of the elements aren't bad, and then there's like 1/3 of it that's bogged down with cheesy effects and predictable breaks.

----

And maybe I'm wrong and by some divine miracle I only happened to hear the absolute worst dubstep out there. Please, throw down the best dubstep you know of and I will listen to it. I would love to be wrong about this.

In my defense, the people in that thread were throwing down pretty shitty brostep that didn't bear much if any resemblance to dub. Anyway I've been listening to the Dubstep Warz show from 2006 that's kind of credited with being what finally broke dubstep into the mainstream, and I really like this sound. It's kind of crazy to see how much the sound has changed in just 6 years. Here's the whole 2 hour show, broken up into tracks (there's a player on the page). I'm sure you guys are probably up on this but for those like me who maybe had only heard modern dubstep, this is well worth checking out.

ZBR, I always link people this dubstep mix if they ever want to hear what original and truer form dub sounds like. It's a heady, deep and atmospheric mix, and full of great dub tracks, as well as great mixing. Warning though; it's not smack your face ameri-dub like Skrillex.

Here it is if you're interested. Make sure to have some decent speakers as there is a lot of melodious low bass in it.

I've heard Skream comment a few times recently saying he'd rather everyone just refer to it as UK bass. It's really interesting to me how there's this big tie between English and Jamaican music. Reggae spawned dub, and dub is really the basis of all this original dubstep music. Reggae/dancehall rhythms, tons of snare rim hits, and the only difference is how they use the technology to do crazy stuff with the bass and all the crazy effects (which is what original dub music is all about anyway, samples and effects). Skrillex, Flux Pavilion, Zeds Dead, etc... all the "brostep" still has elements of dub but they've just combined it with what people call "electro" so heavily that it's really just it's own genre now.

This happens a lot more than you'd probably think.

The usual process of modern, popular music music goes like this..some group of people gets fed up with the common, accepted "white" music (which has often become overly commercialized) and decide to go back to something more authentic and meaningful. One easy example is looking back to punk and where it held its roots in the late 70s/early 80s. Members of bands such as The Clash and the Sex Pistols were fed up with the glam rock and shit that had been dominating the industry. They wanted something authentic that had real roots of rebellion in it. What had that? Reggae and it's "back to Africa" message. What'd they do? They modified and used elements of reggae and formed what came to be known as "punk". You can hear it in a lot of Clash songs, and they even covered reggae songs. But, this is just a quick run down and is by no means exactly how punk evolved (especially since this is focused on the UK punk scene), but the basic idea is still there.

The process continues, punk becomes commercialized, and history repeats itself. Dubstep comes out of dub, like punk came out of reggae, and whatever music before it came out of jazz.

So, really, you can see why dubstep pioneers are so adamantly opposed to "brostep," especially with the commercial success of it in America. In a way, brostep just embodies the commercialism which has exploited dubstep.

And reggae spawned from early american jazz/blues/and rock.... the trail continues back and back. I had no idea about that connection between Reggae and Punk. I had a HUGE reggae phase (never really ended) but I only ever went through a minor punk phase. Looking at how drastically music changed over the 20th century as opposed to the previous centuries... it's crazy to think what's going to happen in the 21st, and we're right in the middle of it with this electronic revival.

Jazz can hardly be considered American music. It may have developed in America, but the people who developed it were not really Americans, just sayin ;).

But yea, UK punk had roots in reggae. American not so much, that came out of mainly garage rock. But, you can hear it pretty heavily in songs like this:

yeah and after listening to it for the last couple days and reading up on the history I can totally see why. A lot of what it was all about in the beginning has been lost and replaced with more robot noises and bigger drops. But I do like some of the better brostep, there's still some good innovation going on, but it's kind of a different genre in many ways, even though it's still called by the same name.

I was reading how Skream started making beats on a cracked version of Fruity Loops at 15 and I was like, wow, Fruity Loops was around back then? pro 2 is fucking beast,

WSMassiv
04-02-2012, 11:35 AM
the s2 is awesome. I mean it's my first controller but I'm pretty confident you can do everything possible with 2 decks on it. 2 two sample decks really make it into a 4 deck controller anyway. I'm at the point where I'd be pretty confident playing a club or show on my s2. Looks like it's $560 now, I got really lucky and got it for $300 on a crazy amazon sale.

The Traktor pro 2 is great software as well. The only other DJ software I've tried is virtualDJ, and it blows compared to Traktor. The coolest thing I've found so far is the grid on the tracks. For instance, say I want to mix a 70bpm reggae song into a 140bpm dubstep track. You can just multiply the reggae song's grid x2, to make its BPM 140 (without speeding up the song). Alternately, you could divide the dubstep song's grid by 2, making its BPM 70. Shit is so cash.

I did listen to the Oakenfold Goa set from '94 on my drive home yesterday, it was voted best ever Essential Mix in 2000 so I figured it was worth a shot, even though I was afraid it would sound dated. It didn't. I hit really bad traffic and was running late for our first dodgeball game, so I once I got past the traffic I was fucking booking it and that set was the perfect soundtrack. Check it.

Nice, thanks for the heads up on that one, it's downloadable so I'm gonna throw that on my ipod and check it out. I would feel the same way considering it's from '94 but I know that Oakenfold is considered a legend though I haven't really listened to much of his stuff.

you've prob listened to that netsky mix way more than I have at this point haha, it is really great though, and D&B usually isn't my favorite genre.

my favorite ultra set: http://www.live-sets.net/2012/03/25/mord-fustang-live-ultra-music-festival-2012-24-03-2012/ Mord Fustang. Lots of life effects and sampling.

ZapBulletRider
04-03-2012, 12:59 PM
Nice, I'll check that. Yeah I've noticed DnB doesn't seem to have the mass appeal I'd expect it to have. I've heard people say "it's just a little too fast" to get into, which I can kind of see. I like a lot of different electronic genres but nothing gets me off like some good DnB. Probably helps that my first intro to electronic music was Squarepusher. If you can get used to 200+ bpm, 170ish seems like a walk in the park.

Oh also, I should mention the Four Tet essential mix. I listened to it yesterday b/c I love Four Tet, but when I went googling it actually came up on some top 10 lists. Some really good shit in there. I've got the Hot Chip one going right now, surprisingly good.

WSMassiv
04-03-2012, 01:06 PM
Been meaning to check out that Four Tet one. Yeah actually I started listening to squarepusher the other day when you guys were talking about him, he is on another level.

I think D&B isn't as popular because it isn't as "danceable" as other genres. House/electro/dubstep get played most in clubs, so that's what makes them most popular I think.

ZapBulletRider
04-03-2012, 01:30 PM
real talk. What Squarepusher are you listening to? Depending on what album you grab, you could get totally different shit. Don't even bother with his last 2 albums, they're ok if you're already a fan but not a good intro. If you want some straight electronic shit, check out Do You Know Squarepusher or Go Plastic or something around the 2000-2001ish time frame. Hard Normal Daddy was '97 and I've actually seen it pop up on some essential dnb album lists, it's a bit more organic & jazz-infused than his uber electronic shit from 2000, but still very electronic and probably one of the best intro albums. Music is Rotted one note was the following year and is straight up a tribute to Miles Davis' fusion shit. It's insanely good if you like that style of music, being biased I don't know how others would receive it, I think pitchfork gave it like a 9.7 though. Then Ultravisitor from 2004 is really good, kind of a mix, the title track is an absolute masterpiece (not a hyperbole) and is one of my favorite songs of all time.

What I love about squarepusher is he's a world-class bassist but he's also got a mind like a machine, and he jumps between the two extremes constantly in his music. He puts out some great shit and shit people probably see as over-indulgent and unlistenable. I like this interview vid because it shows how he works, he's a total recluse (or at least used to be) who wanted to do everything himself and not even be influenced by other musicians (he's talked about that in recent interviews).

Can you tell he's one of my top 10 favorite musicians of all time? haha

(fast forward the first minute)

ZapBulletRider
04-04-2012, 06:25 AM
Yeah and the more I think about it, Hard Normal Daddy is probably the best general intro. And I was wrong, Pitchfork actually gave it a 9.8 but they've since removed the review from their site, no idea why.

hahaha that's great.

I made a small believer out of one of my good friends today (well maybe just less of a hater). This guy HATES electronic music, his only real exposure so far has been to brostep, and in his words he "hates transformer noises and drops." He was annoyed hanging out with people listening to brostep songs and everyone is just waiting for the drop. I have a lot of respect for his taste in music (he's a hip hop connoisseur, has great taste in hip hop) and he's a really smart dude so I knew it would be worth the time. I explained to him about "brostep" and how much great downtempo stuff there is out there.

I showed him some Pretty Lights, SBTRKT, Kaskade, and some old school proghouse Deadmau5. He admitted to liking it. He especially like SBTRKT- "Wildfire"

I am going to continue to change his views. Mild success.

Also, I went to youtube to listen to Ultravisitor. Saw this on the sidebar and listened. I love this:

Nice, I'm actually not real familiar with that album, I've probably heard that song once, years ago, so it may as well have been brand new to me.

And yeah, I was trying to pimp out "Wildfire" after it came up on my Slacker last month, I'm not sure if I posted it here or not but I definitely tried to get a few friends to listen, to mixed success. There's some good shit on that album but about half of it is not my thing. At all.

To throw down another SP track, here's a track I would probably consider the one of the most universally appealing/accessible songs of his, I could be way off on that though...

I know he has that remix of Ellie Goulding's "Lights" which I absolutely love, but I hear a lot of trash talked about his shit and the one song I youtubed the other day wasn't all that great, but it could've been a bad apple. I normally download a bunch of stuff and then add it to iTunes. Then I'll listen to my Recently Added for a couple weeks and filter stuff into playlists so I know where it is. If it doesn't get put into a playlist or make it's mark it'll get lost into my overwhelmingly large iTunes library and forgotten about. Then I listen to those playlists and either remove songs or add new ones that fit. I also get bored with songs really easily (unless they are truly great), so that's why I always have so much crap.

EDIT: I'm sure this was on that link ZBR posted, but here's the part of the Justice Ultra set that was streamed: http://soundcloud.com/letthemusicplay/justice-live-ultra-music. hnnggghhh when it goes dead around 4:20 when Xavier was just standing there dead still for a minute, then We Are Your Friends/Phantom comes blaring in...shivers. see I get locked into an artist or album and listen to it over and over and over and then move on to something else. For instance since doug posted that Netsky essential mix I've probably listened to the full 2 hours 3 times or so, and I've heard about half of it the equivalent of like 15-20 times. The daft punk one I listened to all the way through twice in the same day, and the Nero one I've heard a bunch too. Whenever I go hunting for new music I'll soak in a bunch right at first, then latch on to a couple standouts for a good while. The 911 or however many essential mixes on that one soundcloud should keep me busy for the foreseeable future until I get tired of electronic music again..

edit: haha I just read your edit and I just happened to see you post that on FB and almost said something like "I posted this like 2 weeks ago noob"

WSMassiv
04-11-2012, 06:26 AM
My approach is sort of between you two. On the one hand, when I come across an album/song I really like, I will play it over and over for a week to a few weeks, then get sick of it and not revisit it til months later. I always revisit though.

On the other hand, I go through tons of material, like Luff. When I come across a song I like, I look more into what that artist has done. I definitely go through periods where I listen to more standard instrumental bands, but I listen to way too much music that at this point electronic music is firmly and forever rooted in my lineup. There's just so much out there, and judging by the fact that I find roughly 1-3 new songs a day that I really enjoy, there's tons out there I would love but I just haven't heard yet.

Speaking of... I'm becoming a Madeon fan. Icarus came out not too long ago, might be toast but it's worth it this song is so great on so many levels (lol)
