yeah complextro is taking a big pull on the scene and its gets old after a while. he was like the first (to make it big on that style) him and porter robinson. I love every song they pump out. new and different styles every time.

I was talking to my brother yesterday and he's into dubstep and was surprised to hear I was starting to listen to it too. He told me to check out a few things, including that site I posted, but one name he mentioned was "a friend of his" Porter Robinson. It's funny you guys are mentioning his name. I was only kind of half thinking of checking him out b/c I figured it'd probably be pretty amateurish shit. Now that I see he's actually legit I wonder how well my brother actually knows him, although he is from NC so it's entirely possible.

Jesus Christ, musical elitism in dubstep.

I know, it sucks, but dubstep has changed a lot since it started like 15 years ago, it's almost spawned a new genre. not saying I dislike it, I love a lot of the new dubstep coming out from b-nectar, skrillex, 12th planet, etc... all I'm really trying to say is that the dubstep from 2000 is different from the dubstep in the last 1-2yrs.
and just for the record, I love dubstep. old and new, not trying to be an elitist

This^^. I find that being an elitist and saying that only oldstep is what dubstep truly is, is only ignorance. With anything in music you have to be prepared to embrace change and evolution.. because face it people's interests and what they are looking to hear is always changing, but the great thing about dubstep i find, is that no style really goes out of style, theres just more options and whats popular has become what the majority wants to hear, perhaps not your own style. Embrace the change, preach the ways of the old style and remain and OG, one doesnt have to be an asshole elitist about it.
ive been into dubstep for like 6-7 years now, maybe i wasnt there from the garage transition or the first release of some old school rusko track, but ive been around long enough to watch some evolution and i love it, because its a new genre and watching so many different styles come from it is awesome.
/rant
edit: not to be directed at anyone in this thread, i just run into this kind of one sided "older is better" mindset often

Yeah they hit the nail on the head. disgusted by those tracks. you're just as bad as the guy that said american dubstep is ruining the genre. When a new genre gains popularity a lot of shitty people start to like it and certain artists will appear out of the woodwork and appeal to them, thus making the genre shittier.
I feel like we've had this conversation before.

I have to say I feel kind of silly for all the dubstep hate I've been laying down for the last year. I've started working my way through dropcliff.com's DubPaks (there's 11 of them), and whether that's what is considered "good dubstep" I don't know but there's definitely some stuff I like in there.

Skream is actually the first dubstep I ever heard, although I didn't know it was dubstep at the time. I saw it on a Bayonetta commercial on G4 and googled it, that's also how I found out about La Roux.
http://www.youtube.com/v/LKW1rsaKOnA
here's the commercial:
http://www.youtube.com/v/m8strvZ404Y
it's not even that I loved the song all that much at first, it's that I was watching a Ninja Warrior marathon while pulling an all-nighter for work, so that commercial came on like every commercial break for hours. Eventually it was so stuck in my head I had to look into it.
My brother benj said he was gonna get a boombox and play this on his shoulder while creeping slo-mo up to girls on campus. Hahaha

that in for the kill remix is so fucking raw.the ambient sound into that dirty but simple drop. subtle wobbles. mmmmm
it takes a deep love for electronic music to really like skream. When I first listened to a few of his albums I was also bored and thought the exact same way doug. I liked it but was waiting for an epic drop. but thats not what skream is about everytime. I came into the scene a little late so I hadn't already had an appreciation for his awesomeness or that old school vibe.

So what would be the best stuff to get for somebody starting out? Don't worry about easing me in with the most accessible stuff, I usually get off more on the intelligent subtle stuff than the in-Your-face, crowd-pleasing stuff, although I like that too.
My dubstep collection right now consists entirely of the 11 dubpaks from dropcliff, of which I've listened to about 4 1/2

So that link I posted above, Skream & Benga's BBC Radio 1 show "In New DJ's We Trust" is on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 9:00-10:00 London time, which is 4:00 EST. I happened to stumble across this info around 3:00 this afternoon (which happens to be the 2nd thursday of the month), so I listened to the show live on my way home today on my BBC radio app. Pretty cool, some good shit for sure and I like hearing them goof off in those thick British accents. I'm definitely gonna have to check the tracklist b/c there was some sick shit played, especially towards the end.
That brings me to a question I have... what the fuck is up with that annoying airhorn noise that people play in remixes and on the radio? I've heard it on rap radio for years, and they were doing that on their show too. It occurred to me that it might be the equivalent of a watermark on a photo, to keep people from being able to record shit off the radio without annoying noises fucking up the tracks. But after googling it seems like people DJs actually use this noise in clubs? Do people actually like that?

any other good radio shows (BBC or otherwise) that are worth checking out? Doesn't have to just be dubstep, actually I'd prefer to get a variety of electronic shit... I got the DI Radio app, haven't had much of a chance to check it out yet though. I know it's broken up by genre though which is cool sometimes but not when you want variety.

Should I see Skrillex when he comes to Norfolk in Oct? $20 worth it?
i wouldnt go, but thats just me
as much as i shit talk skrillex. i saw him when he came to n.o. , for 15 dollars its still a good time. plus its not like he plays only his stuff (hehe). drops alot of 12th planet, rusko, flux , doctor p, excision .
inasmanywords,
go.
id say skrillex is worth it just because he seems like he's a fun dude who loves a fun time so he probably puts on a good show. his shit gets mad old for me but id still go to see him live.
might be a crap load of fuckign lame-o's there to see him, but if i was home at that time id go. might come back for it too, but i doubt i will.
plus 12th planet is comin with him, so thats a bonus.

As far as the whole skrillex thing goes...everyone can hate all they want about his stuff sounding the same but his production is nuts. I will admit that he's a shitty dj and that he does recycle sounds quite a bit but hes putting out releases with a multitude of tracks from different genres and none of it is bad. His sound design is nuts and inventive(or at least was) and he's musical, which is more than you can say for a lot of dubstep producers. As for the dj thing, it's not like the guy started out as a dj or something. Similar to the situation of deadmau5 early on, skrillex started djing because he was getting noticed because of his productions, not because he always aspired to be a dj or something. I'm not like a fanboy or something I just don't think he deserves the hate considering, counting only original tracks, he's only put out two EP's for sale and four out of seven of the tracks on the second EP, "More Monsters and Sprites", were remixes of scary monsters. late night ramble ftw

I like skrillex, I like his songs. you are 100% right and I've said it before he's incredibly talented. production is off the charts and he was different when he first came out. ~changed the scene~ I don't hate on him in that respect, I'm just saying the five, six or seven times I've seen him he's only done a decent job dj-ing maybe once. When a person performs live and is that famous I expect their skills to be at the very least tolerable. no excuses. He has every possible avenue and every possible resource to be decent he just doesnt understand it I suppose.
He was pretty good at ultra though because apparently he heard all the "hes a shitty dj" talk. All I could think was, "yeah you better be good at Ultra"

A good free podcast to expose you to a lot of different electronic music is Bleep43. They are 3 hour long broadcasts, but the guy covers a lot of different styles. When you're feeling open, give it a listen. Show 87 is killer.
The noise is just a mixing element some DJs use between songs/breakdowns etc. It's not a watermark.

So is the only real difference between "drumstep" and "dubstep" that drumstep uses a faster tempo, more like DnB speed? I saw this track referred to as drumstep, it's like 170+. I love this song, not sure if it's been posted in here or not:

Also, funny tidbit: the other night my 8 yo daughter and her same-age cousin wanted to have a dance competition in front of me, my wife, and my sister- and brother- in laws. I was in charge of playing music. Her cousin takes cheerleading and knows some routines (one of them was to LMFAO "Party Rock Anthem".. .puke) and my daughter wanted to dance to Phish (I gave her one of the more dance-y track to dance to). It's night and day b/c my neice knows routines but can't make shit up, my daughter is a total spazz with no dance background but was coming up with moves I've never seen before. Then they wanted to have a dance battle; I played some Avalanches, Deadmau5, and that Calvin Harris remix of Jamiroquai's Canned Heat. It was funny as shit. If I get some footage off my wife's phone I'm gonna throw it up on SOMB b/c shit was hilarious. But they were getting live to "Moar Ghosts n' Stuff", it was pretty awesome. My sister in law even got up and got in on it, it was my "DJ moment"
btw here's the Avalanches track I played, this track is awesome if you haven't heard it. In fact that whole album ("Since I Left You") is great, Pitchfork put it at #10 on the Top 200 albums of the entire 2000-2010 decade. The whole album just flows like a party in a can.

I really don't understand "drumstep" it just sounds like DnB with more bass to me. not really sure how this "genre" was born if you already have dubstep and DnB. combine the 2 and you get drumstep? cuz last time I checked, all dubstep really is, is DnB at half tempo (at least the snares) with more wobble. could someone please elaborate on what exactly "drumstep" is?
ZapBulletRider
08-15-2011, 08:21 AM
From what I've seen, dunarrow is usually ~ 140 bpm, where drumstep would be more typical DnB speeds, like 160-180 range
edit: lol phone autocorrect! WTF is dunarrow? Should have said "dubstep"

Skrillex got famous because he used to be the guitarist for a hardcore band 'From First to Last'. At least that is where his fame began. Sorry if this was ready stated.
But it definitely helped him because all the little hardcore scenesters went to follow what he was doing

I've met him and I know a few of the members of fftl and another one makes electronic music too. skrillex got famous for having amazing production, already having a name so people automatically dug him and then deadmau5 posted his free ep before his was all dubsteppy and shit got real. then he made scary monsters nice sprites and then that benassi remix. game over.

pretty sure tahts actually similar to some kind of new GUI/OS for computers that I've seen. its awesome. operates completely different than other one before it.
@luff: and me too luff. always been a HUGE kaskade fan. live he's awesome.
Kaskade are two of my favs and I've seen many many artists. They're also really into the music and chill as hell when I met them. Kaskade is quiet and drinks so classy hahah chuckie sweats more than I do when he plays but is still mad humble. dudestalented as fuck
hahaha thats cool. youve met so many damn people, you suck.
new fake blood is pretty cool. new EP this month. i like voices, idk why but it gets me goin haha. quality on youtube sucks as always but only one i can easily find online right now. that fucking growl at the beginning is so awesome.

word. paper diamond is one of Alex B's side projects. you probably already know this, but he's also in Pnuma Trio, Lippservice (w/ eliott lipp), and also simply as Alex B. one of the best producers in the game. he mastered big gigantic and STS9's last studio albums.

I know I'm taking a risk posting Phish in here, haha, but when I heard this I immediately thought of how easy it would be for them to turn this into a dubstep-ish jam... all it would take is for the bass to change up
http://www.youtube.com/v/Uf5vOlv5-So
gets really sick in the second half too

it's def got that half-time dub feel. I would love to see the crowd react to trey just dropping a huge bassline on the laptop, I picture mass confusion.

I posted a comment on the youtube vid: "inching closer and closer to that inevitable dubstep jam"
and got 2 responses:
"shut up"
"never... real musicians at work here"
haha i bet the band members would be into it though, I've got fingers crossed. There's some jams from 2004 or so that are clearly drum n' bass influenced.
