I'm starting to get a better idea what I do and don't like in dubstep, and electronic in general. I think the whole "let's see how dirty and stripped down we can get this bass modulation" thing gets tiresome to me unless there's something else going on that's interesting. Like drewC said, lyrics help that, especially if it's a song that's somewhat catchy and/or a good melody. Another thing that works really well for me is any kind of synth arpeggiation in a high register. I feel like that complements the dirty bass really well and adds a lot more dimension and movement. Since this isn't always easy to do well, I think that's why a lot of dubstep falls short for me. I think guys with mediocre talent try to make dubstep tracks and without much musical knowledge or melodic sensibility they can't seem to see beyond the gimmicky aspects of dubstep and make something with more depth.

That's my personal take on it, anyway.

Strictly speaking, dubstep isn't really dubstep unless the rhythm is a true dub rhythm. This is why you hear a lot of accent on the off-beats, like in dub and reggae, and it's not just the synth like in the this song I'm posting but often it's the mid range bass hitting the offbeat too, and it sounds sick. For instance, this song's into obviously has trance/electro/techno whatever influnces, but at :54 when the drop happens, tell me you don't hear an underlying reggae/dub/dancehall song there.

This all started with the brits, but electronic music is evolving so quickly nowadays that the Americans have really taken influence from dubstep and put it into everything. Yeah I saw the first paragraph but I was in my car and I forgot to go back and look/listen to the rest. I definitely am not stranger to Dub Reggae, and I of course assumed that's where dubstep came from originally, that's pretty obvious from the name. There are plenty of dubstep songs I've heard that were unmistakably dub-influenced. I didn't mean to give the impression that I thought dubstep was defined by the wobbly bass and synth. This was my point:

Judging solely on what I see pop up on youtube or Pandora, etc, with the label "dubstep", when it doesn't seem to have any rhythmic characteristics of dub, it seems like the term is thrown around probably too loosely. And I'm sure this has a lot to do with guys putting wobbly bass over completely non-dubbish rhythms and calling it dubstep because they don't know any better.
