I'm going to get my dad a new one for christmas, anyone have any suggestions?

All you gear-heads should have experience with these and can give me some advice on the best ones to invest in (cough) DT.

I usually detect radar.


There are some good websites with a lot of reviews like http://www.radartest.com/ With so many on the market, that's prob your best bet. A handful of personal reviews on here prob won't help too much.

agree with ill. even if we are techies i doubt anyone here has had enough experience with enough different models.

also depends on what state/county you r in b/c police in different places use different bandwidths for their detectors.

but anyways, some ppl i know have the cheap $50 dollar ones that have saved them a few times while others have more expensive models that have failed them (and vice versa). but typically from what ive seen here in so cal the cheaper models have worked fine for picking up radar if you dont go too fast, except the cheaper ones give off more false alarms and dont have all of the features (ie where is the radar coming from, etc).

The cheaper ones suck. Look in the 120 dollar range. If you spend anymore than that, it really isn't worth it. I forgot which kind I have, but it has saved me. Well, except the one time I didn't hear it. lol

edit: stay away from cobra. They suck.

Go for the escort 8500. THis has over a 1 mile range on some bands, all the diffrent types of radar bands, and is one of the best selling radars out there, it goes for around 180 or so but it is def. worth it

In all seriousness, all I know is that you need to get one that detects lasers too, because that's what most popo's are using these days.

You need to know what cops in your area use.

In florida 95% of cops use KA. So KA detection is an absolute must. There are a few smaller sheriff dept that still use K. Nobody uses X anymore.

Laser detection is sort of a joke because by the time you detect it you already have been clocked. You have to get a laser jammer.

I bought a Bel rx65. which is the same internally to an escort 8500. There is also a huge Valentine One crowd whio swears by that unit. (DT)

Truth. Only state I have ever gotten speeding tickets in. Happened twice on 95 while only going 8-12 mph over the limit. I was just trying to make decent time during my 9 hour trip from school to home or vice versa

Edit-That's also how I know they don't allow radar detectors. I don't have one, but the dick head cop kept asking where I hid it.

We have 3 Cobra radar/laser detectors, one for each jeep we have. I got one and it worked so good my two sons bought one. And we got the cheap ones from walmart around $50.00 each. They have saved us hundreds of dollars.
One more thing they last, they are around 4 years old, and still going strong.

supposedly it prevents the beam from returning to him and getting a speed. So he shoots right at you and gets nothing.

Yes he would probably go wtf. But as traffic is flying by my guess would be that he would just give the gun a shake or thing it fucked up and shoot the next guy.

that is how all radar detectors work. Radar goes eveywhere. It bounces off everything.

Laser is just a single beam. It is shot (with aim) at a specific vehicle and instantly gives the officer your speed. You can detect laser from over a mile but only when you are specifically targeted.

Yeah they all will function the same way. The only difference is range. The more expensive units have a much greater range.
