recently at my local beach, skimboarding has been banned due to the fact that the local kooks.... who think they can rip, keep flailing their boards out, like its a new style and it looks good. now the lifeguards are threatning to ban it for good.. isn't that some sh#t. i hate how our sport is becoming a household trend and parents are buying their kids top dollar boards. all i have to say is, if you can't keep your board under your feet.. stop showing up at local beaches.. i think it's bullsh$t that i can't skim the beach that i practically learned how to skim on.. and for all the kooks... you aren't half as good as you think you are, and the front flip mctwist is not cool

yea, but that was before skimming was popular... plus i knew i sucked, so i didn't try to skim around people and flail my board at them

but now that skimming is getting popular no one else can learn how to do it?

dirtbikskimguy

that's not what i'm trying to say... what i mean is, if these kids can't control their boards and people keep getting hit.. skimming all together might be banned where i live because these kids think they are good enough to skim with us at the local beach

yeah that's true, plus, there are so manykids getting into skimming that have no idea what it's about

what its about..... its just a sport. Unless your trying to go pro or get recognised for this sport its just a hobbie. ya kids need to start respecting others at the beach instead of having the boards fly into babies playing in the sand.

He's saying they don't even have a clue what to do with the board, they just buy them becuase they see other kids with them on the beach and hear about it in their phys ed middle school/high school classes. Skimming is really hyped in this town. EVERY middle/high schooler knows me and my crowd and it's kind of freaky. I'm starting to hear rumors and all of this cool high school drama shit goin on that I was over 4 years ago when I graduated. And there's lots of kooks claiming to be pro but they can't even hold the board right.

Unfortunately its up to the more experienced skimmers to keep the new guys in line. Have you tried just talking to those guys and explaining how they are going to get skimming banned?

Jeff.Liu
09-08-2006, 12:07 AM
talk to the guys first, if no comply, tell the lifeguards that those kids have nothing to do with the rest of the skimmers. Get the lifeguards to move them down the beach

I saw some kid at jensen who told me he was pro i then saw him try to wrap a wave but instead he jumped off his board and did some flippys in the air. 4-5 years ago when i skimmed there it was so nice. i would see mike and his crew everyonce in a while other then that it was me and the beach no kooks no noone

Mike, Ken, and dirtbikskimguy (?),

If you guys are really serious then you need to go talk to the lifeguards. And Im not talking about after you skim with a hat on sideways. Two or three of you need to go to the main tower there in regular human clothes, so these guys realize that you drove there specifically to talk to them, and you need to ask them this:

We realize that skimboarding is currently not allowed at this beach, unfortunately we think a small group of inconsiderate people is ruining it for all of us. We would love to help come up with a solution that would make your jobs easier and allow us to enjoy our sport. Who would be the best person to have that disscusion with?

If you guys really are serious about fixing this then, you need to act like it.

The lifeguards can make or break you..........as you guys have found out. I wave at whatever guard is on duty @ Juno as I walk by. Sometimes they dont even wave back......but I know 2 of them now, just from doing that.....one of which even let us skim in the swim zone a couple times. Its not coincidental.

lol, at skimboarding becoming a household name. :D

I agree with AP. I wouldn't hesitate to let them know (in a friendly fashion) that they need to shape up. Otherwise, I would just find another beach.

How bad is the crowd? I have skimmed there a few times and I relaly didnt think the crowd was too bad.... But I have seen a group of like 12 year olds who thought they ripped. A few of em had one sock on..... Are these the same kids??

I just hate the kids who think they're the shit, when in actuality they suck...I remember when I was trying to get on the waves for the first time, these kids, who were only skimmin on the sand, "show off" in front of me an my friends by skimming right in front of where we were skimming, just on the sand. Jerks. Also kids who buy high priced boards, and they're beginners, or just do a 20 minute session and sit there playing in the water. Waste of money.

I thought people in this sport would be more respectful and have courtesy.

Derek Makekau
09-08-2006, 09:08 PM
who cares if some kid thinks he rips and doesn't?

if you guys are leaps and bounds better than these guys, why not just skim so that they know it? or you could just complain about how good they think they are on a message board.

yknow, cause that's effective.

I saw the coolest thing in the world in gh the other day, short little fat kid with a wedge- couldnt have been more than 8, just ripping though, 180's, pop shuv its, grabs, fucking cool as hell, and this was a hefty little kid. I'd never seen somone his age, and with his weight, getting it done so good. I mean most of the time its the kids with the wood vic's with no wax or any sense of what to do with a board, that just get in the way. anyway i showed him a couple of tips to help his game out and went on my way down the beach. admist all those little kids, rich bastards with no style, and shoebies, theres kids like this, so be careful not to overlook, and always be generous. you are an ambassador of skimboarding when you're out there.

Well I'm still a beginner and I'm buying a high priced board that I bought myself and I'm learning how to wave ride. And I don't stop skimming for about 2 hours when I'm to tired.

Does that make me one of those kids?

I think this mostly has to do with the percieved lack of hierarchy that used to exist, and I'm guilty of this line of thought myself to be totally honest...

When "we," and I use that loosely, were coming up in a much smaller skim scene everyone who skimmed in the entire town or even area knew each other. The veterans deserved respect and the groms gave it to them. The groms figured that once they were veterans they would get the same respect.

But since the scene blew up so big, none of the new groms know who the old schoolers are and thus don't give the same kind of respect to people who have skimmed that break for 15+ years. People of our generation expected one day to be treated with respect by the new groms and since it didn't happen it seems like we grew really resentful.

chase, ken, mike, and whoever else wants to protest/ explain our issues compared in skimboarding, lets meet at jensen asap and get this over with. its not really that great at jensen anyways but yea it would be better than skimin at some beach where our board gets sucked into mid break and theres 4 sharks just waiting for us to go get it.

TheRealVortex
09-09-2006, 10:06 AM
yeah normandy sucks for sharks. remember that shark just chillin on the beach and wash back down in the trough when we were skimmin... then washed back up and down. it was a good 5 6 foot bullshark. dont want him to get ahold of your foot or somthin.

funny i saw this post yesterday. I went skimming today at fort pierce jetty, and there were at least 15 skimmers spread out along the beach, including myself and 2 friends. Um.... wtf? The jetty sucks for skim. I dont think that beach has ever seen an exile, let alone 4 or 5 in a day. haha. Just strange where these kids pop out of.....
