Yeah, that's goddamn terrible - though I would **never** check any high dollar equipment like a notebook, camera, etc. All that stuff always goes on my carry-on (plus if you've seen how they handle checked bags, you really don't want them touching your gear).

Aeromexico tried to make me check my carry-on equipment once because I was in a row with emergency exits and all the overheads were full. I refused without some type of receipt as proof of what I checked (they couldn't) and held up the flight for 10 mins until another passenger finally offered to change seats. I felt like a dick but there was no way I was letting go of my gear.

Another forum I frequent just had a thread from a photographer who had $20,000 worth of gear stolen the last night they were in Costa Rica.

ouch. when i was in costa/panama there were some sketchy people there. when were were crossing the panama/costa rica border, we had to keep out bags on us or like in between the legs because a crowd of people gathered around our group asking to help "carry" bags
