I want to get some of you guys out there and your contacts and try to get something together to get skimming on the show E:60. I mean they did a segment on competitive eating and some computer geeks having a fight club. Why not skimming? I had a serious discussion about it on the way to the Skim Invasion. I definitly think the west coast should be show-cased and cabo. But I want all coasts to get named and said that the west coast is the virtual Mecca. But definitly some of the other coasts at least mentioned.

So how do we go about this? I think we submit a nice email/letter/package with videos and pics to ESPN with insite from people like Bill Bryan, Paulo Prietto, Morgan Just, Tex Haines, Harry Wilson, Skim City Greg, etc. Skimmers from the past like Garth Wycoff, Chris Henderson, etc. as well. I think it can be done with some effort and help from serious people and pro photogs on here and in the sport.

So let's get the ideas flowing.

people should try and talk to FUEL TV to get a skim show going, or contest results on the weekly update, and things like that

competitive eating is bigger than you would think

^ my point kinda. I think skimming is that big as well.

you forgot peluso on the list. maybe show some of the sweet UST vids and stuff like that. SOMB should be featured because i think i plays a pretty big role in the skim community(i think you said that yourself)

competitive eating actually draws crowds.... (more than 45 people)

skimmer-x
10-27-2008, 12:33 PM
Skimming can draw crowds if exposed to the media. Yes Aaron is included thus the ETC. And not just the super clean version of the sport. Just real and whatever they say in an interview is just what they say. There are alot of other crap that gets on E:60 than eating. They had a fight club with 20 office workers from a computer software place. This can be done. I don't want negativity. I want people to post who can do this and don't take no for an answer or accept defeat.

ask permission from movie producers of the big skim movies to use clips and make a montage with highlights. interviews with this years high ranked ust members. also with organizers of the ust and the other skim tour... forget the name
edit: maybe go with the history of skim, like the evolution of skimboards from wood circles to carbon sticks today

SkimOnline should be featured. The message boards shouldn't. Just my two cents.

you do have a point. maybe just some stories of people meeting on here.

it'd be a good start off. Show on fuel would be sick though. Then you could cover different spots/people and not be limited to an hour or however long the show is. But i like the idea

I think skimboarding media has more steps to take before it reaches this goal.

Me too. I feel like the sport is still way too contained within CA. You are starting to see branching off in recent years (Portugal, Brazil, etc) but there needs to be more incorporation of areas besides the west coast. No hurt in trying.

I don't think Robs meant the key here is incorporating different scenes. The key is continuing to advance in terms of the quality of product the skim media puts out.

Yeah.

The number of Media Gurus is way too low also. I can only think of like less than 10 people that could support a show like this...and then that takes away from the true vital things the sport needs. (web sites, online mags, skim dvds, etc)

Look, if we keep waiting for the "right time" it will pass us by. What do we have to lose? We are already under the radar, no one really knows what skimming is, and most sposnors and their dollars could care less. So I say nothing. I say Cali is featured, show the other spots and how it has spread, show the history of riders, styles, and progression of all, and yes, show the flatland stuff since it is part of skimming.

Like I said, I say we get something together in the next 6-10 months and send it to them and see if the big fish bites. If it does, then maybe, just maybe the sport at least gets some respect and potential sponsors see what might be. I don't know, will it change anything? Maybe, maybe not. But will it hurt anything? Hell no.

I think my dad can help. He's best friends with Digger Phelps, a leading ESPN sports analysist , and knows TONS of other people that work in the media. I'm not totally sure if he has the time or would be willing, but if you ever are desperate for something I could bring it up with him.

I think this is a great idea and they might consider it being an unknown sport they will get a lot of credit for showing it first if it gets big and there is so much story that could be told in the show. I don't know what I would be able to do but I'm willing to help if you need it.

Red Bull sponsors skimboarders right, why not try to get them to post videos on their web site. I think that alone might get some recognition from sports media.

They don't sponsor riders, just events right now.

This is a good idea.

Random thoughts...........

I would like to see skimboarding packaged as "the only edgy, underground, progressive alternative board sport remaining.

I want it to be known that it has severed its ties with surfing.

I'd like to hear the skim community laugh back at the other sports that have gone mainstream and now rely on all the hype and clothing and accessory industry to survive. A true rebel in and of itself. A gritty lifestyle....an obsession, an artform.

I want to see the extrememly dangerous side of skimboarding focused on as well as the super technical stuff. Not the in between mediocracy that catches the tourists attention for 10 minutes crap.

I want to see a contrast with the other sports, with their "fixed riding surfaces, safety gear, and inherent packaged commodities and corporate responsibilities.

I don't want to hear about skimming being a crossover type sport where it was something to do when the surf was flat.......thats played out... Sure that's history, but history shows that the sport evolved into a wave riding art because sliding up and down the shore all day gets boring. Going towards the waves vs sliding on the flat sand was and is a natural progression. They are now two different things.

I would like to see the artistic approach touched on. The core "Laguna Mentality" the feel, the past and the present.

Huge and interesting shorebreak, remote locales.....travels... along with crazy rides and balls out dedication. *think* "in search of. Showcase the danger.....balls to the wall......charging aspect of the sport.

I would like no mention of contests.........

I wouldnt call him a 'leading' analysist. He only does College Basketball.

Knowing him dosn't mean much when it comes to something like this.

Yeah Sid, I like that direction. Now I just need help in getting some interested people together, i.e. writters, photogs, etc. to help get something together. I am good at coming up with ideas and motivating people to do it. As to the writting skillz and the such, I do not have. But I have the motivation to get this done. Anyone interested please PM me or post here. Otherwise I will have to just go with what I can do on my own. I may PM some of you out there for your help and opinions.

I wrote them and asked who submitting stories or ideas work since they don't "accept" stories. I say we need a stalker or an "insider" that has an email address or a way to reach the people on E:60. I will post some sames.

I got a really insightful PM and it had alot of info. Maybe Fuel is the direction needed since there aren't really any human stories to get ESPN's attention. Not saying I am giving up on it since they do peices on just sports and not the people, but now we have two angles that can be worked.

Fanaian
10-29-2008, 09:12 AM
Why not put a video together and send it to fuel TV to get their attention? Even a skim movie like bearded could do it.

Subject: E:60
Message: Hello, I was just curious as to how E:60 goes about getting their ideas for stories. I enjoy the show and know of a sport that I feel would be a great segment. I read where it says on the site that you do not accept story ideas. So I was wondering if there was any way to submit ideas. Thanks

Not knocking what you did...but I think it's funny that you emailed asking about how to submit story ideas, while noting that they don't accept story ideas.

I know you said before that we need someone on the inside. I agreed with you then and I do now more than ever.

Seems like a tough egg to crack, Frank. Obviously they're handling everything in house, and they must not be hurting for story ideas at all.

It'e ESPN. Between Brett Favre & the cowboys sucking, no they are not out of stories. We need an insider.
