whats going on? i am not new to the site but just recently joined and was wondering if the people from NY on here wanna do a meet? i just recently ordered a boom pro from skimcity and rode many carbons before this purchase and of course i get it in the mail and the rail is smashed luckily skimcity are good guys and sending a new one. i usually go to Robert Moses, democratic pt with my truck Demo on perfect days gives u great liners. reason im asking to do a meet is that i skim with a few of my freinds and been skimming with them for nealy 10 years. i really havent ran into anyone thats even decent or really loves the sport. so if anyones down lets set something up this season. or if anyone just wants to meet up during the week i skim year around,

just received my second boomhower from skim city, they sent my original and the bottom was damaged... 4993 soo i sent it back and i had to pick out a new one. i was upset about it cause the board looked sick. the good think about it was they let me pick out any arch bar and rear pad. here is the new board 4995and it beautiful i was a little scared of the colors being purple and all but it is gorgeous.

At the risk of sounding like a moron, where's the best place to skim at robert moses. i've never been because i'm about 30 minutes west of it and the only beach that go to that has reasonably good waves for skimming is jones beach.

Cupsogue outer beach has been good this past week or so, sider keeps teasing but never really produces. Sandbank liner was back for a couple of days midmonth, might come back if the swell and winds stay easterly. Will prob be there tomorrow, capt. kirk and myself and maybe a random or two. Whats the slope situation for everyone else's beaches? Cups is at like 25 degrees and 10 foot of height, holds 3ft. swell nicely, not enough for much bigger than that.

Smitty is flat. Atleast at the western part, haven't gotten my offroad pass so I have no idea what the eastern part looks like. Good for bodyboard and surfing, def not skimming.

tooo any robert moses skimmers i was out at field 2 and it wasnt great breaking far out and it was low tide than, a rain shower came through i went to the car hit the bowl and drove down to field 3 and the beach is almost gone their it has a really nice slope and shore break. i cant wait to go back during hightide but u should def try it out.

That sucks man, I already signed up for seabright. If you go to dune road past 5pm, check if lashley beach has people checking stickers. We were there today, was fun even with the smal swell. Cupsogue is alright to the left or near the Jetty, but lashley should b better.

keep in mind that people come out of the weeds on the weekends, which results in an immense crowd at Jones. Typically, the shoreline is fully occupied with little children and bros tossing footballs from Field 6 to Field 2. In such circumstances, I have find it easiest to wake up super early to make it to field 6 before the parking lot is closed off. From there, walk far down to the left (when you start seeing nude people you've reached the right place). If you arrive to late, drive down to Field 2 (the parking lot is towards West End) and skim to the right of 2. If you're ambitious and don't mind a long walk, your best bet would be West End 2. I haven't been there in a while so I can't tell you have the sand is currently, but the spot usually works best at high/mid-high tide. West End is, without a doubt, the best field to skim at Jones Beach State Park.

All I'm going to say is I skimmed LI a few times and the best skim wasn't at any of the fields....there's some other really incredible beaches on that little stretch...explore a little...and take a walk down where you can't take a car.

Well, I don't think you are allowedo n the beaches at this poitn, and even so, going in the water wouldn't be too wise. Sewage and stuff got all in the water so it's all icky and stuff. My cousin was telling me that his friends that have gone surfing since the hurricane have gotten weird rashes and just not nice stuff from being out in the water.

East end is squeaky clean, in the days just after the storm it was all "icky and stuff" but has since cleaned up to average normal ocean water that has not given me rashes in 20 or so sessions. Also access is fully legal round here, has been for almost the whole month of november. With the exception of cupsogue which is also open nowsa and pikes which i just don't care about.

Idlewild Park just north of JFK airport is chock full of a variety of turtles including a few pleurodira. Also there is a trailer near the cricket field that has a bunch of turtles in tanks and a plethora of information on the local turtle specis. The school children take field trips there... it's like a ghetto makeshift turtle zoo.

Would any of you guys be able to point me in the right direction for really solid local skim shop, and hopefully some local contacts to secure a contest? An help would be much appreciated.

There isn't a single dedicated Skim shop on Long Island, a few surf shops might stock some higher end zaps or maybe a Vic or two, but your best luck would be to contact the guys at the Long Beach surf shop, they put on a big surf contest every year so they probably know the ins and outs, but a fair warning, Long Beach was utterly destroyed by Sandy, so who knows whats going on with the beaches or the town of Long Beach for that matter. You could also try Bunger surf shop as well.

Thank you, I wouldn't expect there to be any shops for skim only. I meant just a shop that you LI skimmers feel supports the sport or makes you feel welcomed. But the Long Beach shop might be worth talking to. I know Sandy really jacked things up so where have you all been skimming lately and do you think any of those areas would be able to hold a contest with 30-40 cars say late may early June?

Honestly, Long Beach is in queens, the majority of us are from Nassau and Suffolk and really know nothing about the long beach area besides that its typically a surf spot since all the jetties keep the beaches relatively flat. There's no one on here that I know of that is from that area.

If you could find a shop in Nassau (like Bunger) who would help throw a contest at Robert Moses it'd be much better in terms of getting a decent slope and waves that are good for skim and its more consistent. Parking shouldn't be an issue at RM unless its the dead of summer on 4th of July weekend, labor day or memorial day.

Suffolks got some good beaches but the slope varies literally from day to day, and getting things done out here is a joke, unless your paying someone off, blowing them or have 10 years to wait I wouldn't bother. We have no really top end dedicated surf shops and none of them to my knowledge have any connections or knowledge of how to get things done in the political realm for contests.

I myself live in Suffolk, I skimmed and surf Smiths Point day in and day out. It has its days but lacks any real consistency or waves that are desirable with slope thats excellent for 45 minutes than any tide movement ruins, some of the Jetties that the other guys out here ride give some really nice setups, but it's all ridiculously private parking/rich douche bags during the summer and unless you want 40 cars with ludicrous parking tickets its pretty much not do-able.

moses is a state park, bunger couldnt get a contest there in they sold both shops, i went to babylon bunger ( which i never do ) they of coarse said they would help, but there dicks and only care about making money not the sport, so now i have to talk to sammy at sayville bunger one day this week and ask for his help, consistency on LI sucks unfortunately, and i highly dout you can get permits in the hamptons, cause well its the hamptons, so im trying for gilgo, like i said to colter before tho, gilgo starts charging when highschool lets out for summer so it has to he held in late may or early early june, but the first weekend in june in south side shootout so i will not be here, but ill let you know what sammy says when i go there this week, cheers to living on a shitty island :)

Yeah Glenn has been helping get local contacts and that is a great first step, any town government contacts would really help with securing a permit and that is the biggest hurdle to clear. It's gonna be tough figuring out when the best bet for contest date/s are gonna be because it looks like the 1st week in June has good tides (Saturday afternoon high @2:40pm) would be just about perfect but I know Glenn just said he wouldn't be in town that weekend the next weekend with good tides would be the 15th (afternoon high at 1pm) the only problem is we would be really squeezing a bunch of contests into a really small window (LI on the 15th, Seabright 22,23 Rhode Island on the 29th ). It is highly unlikely that we would move it all the way up to the 18th of may because the water would still be quite cold, and June statistically has better wave consistency. I feel like a dick Glenn, but that's looking like our best weekend for this bad boy. I'm shooting the parks and recs department an email now so let's keep plugging away at this.

hey y'all I am living on the east coast for the first time in my life and might be staying out in long island for the summer (wantagh area) would love to meet some new york skimmers and get initiated into the scene out here.

I've been hearing that the hurricane flattened all the beaches, any recent news about anything showing shape? Stoked to get in the ocean either way.

Whether the waves are there or not I hope this contest comes together so I can meet all of you at once! Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

I know the county park I work at lets you drink their alcohol, but if the cops catch you with any of your own, they confiscate it.

p.s. we found some good slope out here yesterday at Tiana, was my first time off the surfboard in like three weeks! hoping to get some good wraps or lines this caturday

been talking to people over at jones beach this contest me and colter are trying to set up mite just happen at jones, so ant if you have any advice on spots over there with good conditions in the early to mid june let me know so i can pick a field

Field 6 seems to be the most consistent. It has been working for us every year since 2007, whereas Field 4 and 5 have been on and off from summer to summer. West End 2 definitely gets the best break when the set up is right, but it is by far the most inconsistent and is very tide specific.

I'll take a ride down today, and report back with how everything is looking.

lemme know im gonna call the manager at jones today, isnt feild 6 west end, i been down there a few times to go to the jetty and it didnt seem that good?

No. Field 6 is the eastern most field, whereas West End is the western most field. The jetty is located at West End 2. The slope is slowly starting to come back at field 6, and there is a nice sandbar that will make for some epic skim once a decent sized swell comes in.
