View Full Version : OUCH! Big ol' ding in my tail.

So yeah....my best day of skimming in months, and of course my board gets shoved into a piling tail first. One of the cracks goes all the way through the thickness of the board, but it doesn't look like it will brake off or anything. Basically there is a large chip of glass missing with the foam exposed underneath. I know I need to let it sit and dry out before I do anything, but then what? Sand it down a bit, then repair? Will the suncure I have do the job or do I need something more?

Dam that's sucks , I think you should put some epoxy in between the crack and the foam , clamp it down let it dry , then sun cure the top to make it smooth. I think

Suncure is so hard to make work on rails. Since your rails get the most action, and they take the most beating, the suncure will ALWAYS chip off. Even if you get it glassed over professionally it will most likely still chip. Your best bet there is to suncure it and use it until the suncure starts chipping and flaking. Once it starts doing that, chip all of the suncure off, resand, and re suncure. The nose of my board is all banged up and i go through this process once a month.

take a look at J-Gordon's "fix a wood board" thread. I would use a similar technique here, the exception being I wouldn't clamp right onto the fiberglass. I just recently had the whole bottom layer of my board peel back from the nose, so what I did was cut a couple pieces of plywood pretty much the shape of what I was trying to fix (in my case it was the first 6-8 inches of my board, so a big triangle basically), but just a little bigger. Then I took some of that 5 min epoxy that you can get anywhere for like 2 bucks. Mixed that up, applied it all inside, then sandwiched the board between the two pieces of plywood and clamped overnight.
The only thing I'd say watch out for is to make sure the epoxy doesn't stick to the plywood. You can use a shower curtain or other plastic in between the board and wood for that.
Then make sure it's watertight, like make sure there are no spots that didn't get epoxy on them.
That technique will fix that solidly w/ no problems, but make sure you get sand out first and make sure it's completely dry.

i have heard of suncure being very chip-prone, but i actually have suncure on the bottom of my board and it still hasnt come off....

Well, after cleaning it up and cutting out all the splintered fiberglass, I decided to put the tube of Suncure I had laying around to use. Turned out pretty good, just ugly. No biggie though.....it's an all black board, it was ugly after one session.
I'll keep an eye out for chipping though.

What you should use to keep the epoxy from sticking to the wood is wax paper.......the stuff your mom uses. Works great!

I think you know more about spelling than board construction.

too bad it dissolves and weakens the board.
