View Full Version : went fishin a bit today
decided that i wanted to get back into summer routines so i went fishing today in some ponds around my neighborhood, went to the first spot to be surprised by algae, then went to next spot for more algae, then finally to another which was clear.
caught 2 bass in 3 casts and another after a bit (all about 2 lbers.), but then mr. gator came and i got snagged on a lily. got some pics.

went out the other day too. Ya really need a boat to fish the good lakes here (lake marion, jackson, kissisimmee, toho). This is a picture from a burrow pit that was stocked i dont know how long ago...Every bass there is under or around 1lb that ive caught. A guy pulled out a 7lber the same day earlier which is amazing because there is barely any water left in this thing. Size sucks (when youre used to 2-3 lb average) but you catch a shit load of them working the lillies, which give a good fight to get them

Went out and threw a few casts from my kayak the other day, got 3 trout, but 4 catfish :(. More cats/puffers than quality fish = failed fishing trip IMO

Typo...Its actually Lake MariAn...There is probably a lake marion/marian in just about every state. Just like Hollywood, newport, irvine are cities in both CA and FL.
yeah that is true. i've fished in lake marion, sc. some biggggg blue catfish. can get up to 40+ lbs. good striper/redeye bass fishing too.
I got this one last weekend fishing my neighbors pond. Caught him on motor oil colored plastic grub.

first off, props to s3 for being a bass angler.(respect just skyrockecked)
but a picture of a 2 pound(tops) bass is hard to pass off as a 3.5-4 pounder.
4 pound bass are big.
question?
where is that? socal?
Being the phase-boy that I am, I went through a huge bass phase around, 14-15 years old. Not a sport to win the ladies in santa cruz. My infatuation had to be UTR.
Couple spots in SC, though, that can produce!
*edit

of course i didnt, i never keep anything. "Let em' go so he can grow!"

OK, you guys busted me. I figured that if ejb2591 could pass his fish as 2lb'ers I could surely get my to pass for at least a 4lb'er......
So, yeah, that fish is probably tops, 2.5 lbs, but give me a sack of lead pellets and I could easily get him to go for 5 lbs back at the weigh in !!
I took this fish in my neighbors pond in Loomis, Ca just outside of Sacramento last weekend. I can literally walk to the edge of this pond in less than a minute outside my front door. And my neighbor lets me fish it any time I want.
And Dale, those are some serious hogs you hauled in !!! I love how big fat largemouths' lips and cheeks look all rubbery when they get to that size. Nice job on those. I'll be hunting some big ones like that this summer drop shotting at Folsom Lake. So if Noah or any of the norcal guys wanna do some fishing after work let me know. I don't fish that lake on the weekend with all the fleas on the water.

Fly fishing is the most relaxing thing in the world. My family has a house up in the Catskill sin New york. 5 minutes from some of the best trout fishing in the northeast. About 15 minutes from Roscoe, New York. "Trout town USA". I got real into flyfishing up there in the recent years.
Dale: You motherfucking gotta be kidding me with those bass. Fuck your Floridian lakes full of mongoloid bass. I bass fished my entire young life, about 12 years or so, and my biggest couldnt have been over 4 pounds. You are a fucker.
jeez those are some fatty's mapdash. insane. my record is a 9 lber i caught with a bluegill.

just went again, pulled in a nice 2.2/ 2.5 lber. fought really well. had him on for a solid 2 minutes. then as i was going to pull out of the pinestraw in my golf cart i started burning out, then almost slipped into the pond, but with some careful maneuvering i got out.

yeah beachbum, i used to be real into cranks but have found myself experimenting with plastics a lot lately. i've even found rooster tails (normally used for saltwater trout) to catch a lot of bass, that's what i used yesterday. i use anything from plastic lizards to the classic worm.

nothing is more fun than using a topwater popper on a pond with an algae top. you just twirk that thing and watch the bass hit. so awesome.
what is a top water popper, sounds fun if the bass hit it on top
it doesnt sink, it floats and you reel and jerk it (haha) and it makes pop noises with the water and splashes and shit making the bass think that its something at the surface, then they come up and hit it like a great white to a seal.

i agree. i love throwin topwater (frogs, spittin image, hula popper, rapala skitter pop, rapala skitter walk, buzzbait)...I especially love skitter walks. Plastic frogs when tossin lillys.
I know what you mean about "algae" but i think you mean duckweed...it covers the pond in a green later on top and spreads when you reel the lure thru it (leaving a line behind it)??? Bass love that shit.
yeah sorry i didn't know the name of it. theres a pond by the chipping green in my plantation and its covered in that and im so anxious to take a pop and fish it . prob will do that tomorrow.

yeah its not a plantation anymore but it was way back when, still called a plantation. yes on a golf course. yeah most houses on hhi are.
successful mission, caught 2 bass and 1 bluegill in about 20 minutes. a total of like 12 hits, really hard to set the hook with so much algae

If there is a lot of algae use a plastic worm without a weight or a frog.
the popper worked great though. same job as a frog, haven't had much luck with them unfortunately.

if its duck weed like beachbum said then use something with more mass that will part it better. Like a frog or maybe a buzz bait. Plus you wont catch annoying pan fish.

One of those I am holding was in the back of farm 13. Took her on a ratltrap. The other was in a local canal on a jig and pig.
Been killing fish on frogs lately.
Favorite baits?......totally depends on the water and conditions. too many to name.
I've fished fresh water off and on throughout my life (although I mainly fish saltwater) and I still have NEVER caught a fuckin fish on a frog. And Lord knows I've tried...
i went fishing about a week ago and didnt catch anything. the lake i usually go on (lake pontchatrain) is a mix between fresh and saltwater so they have some pretty nice sized red/specs but they opened up a spillway so now its all fresh water and the fish have headed out. it blowsss. also, this green sludge covered the lake and made the water smell and look like shit. theres dead fish everywhere. couldnt even go skim today it was so bad :/
edit: starting fishing the river and ponds by my house, catching 3-6 poound bass of plastic worms and spinners
haven't used a spinner in a while, used to catch some massive 1.5 lb/2 lb bluegill with beetlespins back in the day though.
