3/4 vs. 5/8

Is there really that much of a difference between the two? All i have ever had is 3/4 inch boards (grape and victoria) because I was thinking about getting the exile grady or the paulo model very soon.

the grady and paulo models are very light i have the paulo model, grapes and vics are alittle bit heavier to my latest knowlege. So i think its all about what you are looking for in your board.

i know syndromes have a very good weight to them and to me ride very very nice :D

i rode both 5/8 and 3/4 boards and i like the 3/4 a lot better.

i think that if you are used to 3/4 just go with a 3/4 paulo or grady because it would suck to be used to alot of float and then you step down to a 5/8.

depends on the conditions...place like california...there is really no need for 3/4's, 5/8's will do fine...but in a place like florida where the waves are not powerful have a 3/4's board will be to your advantage...but it is also up to you...100% preference and your decision...hope that helped a little

I like my 3/4" Exile much better than my brother in laws 5/8" Exile....and he feels the same. :)


For a mediocre rider that is....the heavier board drops easier and the float is really helpful.

i started my first 3 0r 4 boards 3/4 then went to a 5/8 exile. within a couple months i was missing that float. now im back to 3/4 and im never gonna switch back. But, i did keep my 5/8 exile for the big and crazy days cuz its shreds. i would without a question recommend a 3/4 if you are only gonna have one board. i think the benfeit of float outweighs any decrease in turning which is pretty minor. you can also get tapered to help with turning if you are worried.

It really depends on you and your style. Normally, in California, 5/8" would be more of the norm, but I know guys in [California] who rock the 3/4" and kill it when it's huge. I have a 5/8" Paulo and it's sick in big shorebreak and liners. And you can carve the heck out of a 5/8, but you lose the float, which you need to make up for with speed. Lots of speed.

id have to say 5/8'' i just love the feel. if youve only had a 3/4 before it might feel a bit weird though. up to your preference.

i definatly feel i get out to a wave faster on a 5/8". 3/4 is definatly more floaty but i feel 5/8'' makes up for it in speed.
it gets big here occasionally but all of winter is normally small reform liners coming through and i dont really feel i need the extra thickness of the 3/4" but thats just my preference.

an option might be to go with 5/8'' but one size bigger than what you would get a 3/4'' in

i've been riding a ML 5/8 hybrid, and i weigh like 165...

i'm a fast runner,and i'm thinking about getting a new smaller board. do you think it would be a better idea to get a M 5/8 or a MS 3/4?

+1. that's what i did with my exile. i like 5/8" because to me it seems faster as well. it might be just me, but when i had a 3/4" board, it floated nice but it felt like it took longer to reach waves as compared to my 5/8", and i'm pretty fast.

Yeah they DO run that fast. It may not seem like it but they haul major ass.

Also there are other things they do very well that allows them to make all those waves. For the most part their drops and transitions are seamless, they barely lose any speed. They have excellent board control, and have very good timing.

Any and all of those things contribute to why they can dominate on a 5/8th.

^ur contradicting urself. 3/4 is used for more float than 5/8 but 3/4 is less manuverable. Since pros can already get out far on 5/8s theyre not going to want to loose manuverability when they can already float out fine on a 5/8s

it all depends on your drive to get the little things down pat...your drop/timing and how smooth you can get on the board, learning to sideslip and learning when to sideslip, learning o pump and when o pump..workin on the littlest things has the biggest affect...look at mo justs pump its insane...look at gradys/beaker/paulos sideslip...flawless

i have used both a 3/4th and 5/8 for about a year each and I feel that a 5/8 is somewhat faster and the control is a major difference i like 5/8th better personally but im stuck with a 3/4th for now ...........damn you FL

if you have enough confidence in your skimming, go with the 5/8..

All pros and cons. a 5/8 will be thinner and lighter but may break easier. in addition they loose a little float ability but turn better. a 3/4 will float you more, prolly be a lil stronger, but will turn looser. its all up to you and how advanced of a skimmer you are. personally i like 3/4 better but a 5/8 will give you more of a feel of the wave your riding. just prefrence.

Everyone's talking about 3/4, what about the SOl 7/8??? that must be like a surfboard.

speaking of surfboards, assuming a surfboard can float your body weight with zero speed, which I think they can for the most part, they have to have tremendous flaot, and therefore thickness, how do they reatin the ability to carve the face of the wave, if it's a totalally different concept then don't bother explaining.

I guess this is where a Maui skimmer fills the gap right? a surfboard with no fins, ,ust be fun for liners, skurfing... Tow ats...

heh. the sol 7/8's isnt for everyone. i like mine but the rails are trimmed down to resemble a 5/8's if not thinner. theyre really sharp....maybe too sharp so that they dig into the wave and go under when wrapping hard.

see if you can try some and see for yourself. no one here knows what youll like

Buy a board either way, get started if you enjoy riding it stick with it if not change it, its not always the boards fault....
