There will be a free (or almost free) skim contest in south brevard county in late august or early september, hurricanes permitting, open to anyone who is not (board) sponsored. It will be an hour-long expression session format with judges: best barrel, best air, best trick. Each event will have its own dedicated hour. The prize for each event is a skimboard (slot, zap, and syndrome are contributing top prizes).

3 hours, 3 boards, nearly free entry. Basically a free skim jam with prizes. It's been 3 years since I threw that spanish house x-trak skim jam, which was fun, and now we're going experimental with the format...

I was going to bring a grill and stuff, but that way complicates things...

We're going for a clusterfu(k free-for-all with carbon boards on the line..

stay tuned for explicit contest format and event location/dates...

why can't you be board sponsored?

Scrub
07-23-2006, 09:26 AM
because the prize is a baord you couldn't ride if sponsored. plus, they need to make it fair for people who want a new board.

hurricanes permitting.. I like that. I think you should have something for the ams who have board sponsors just for prizes. I would like to see kids like Stephen B. and Benji, you know those kinds of kids. I will come though just to skiam

Once I write out the rules/format, I'll also explain why we're doing it our way. There is still room for suggestions.

It's basically a format where people can win big, the judges can more casually hang out and skim at the same time and still attract hoards of groms.

Contest Format:
- Open competition (no age divisions). Riders can not be “board-sponsored”.

- 3 One-hour-long segments: Best “Barrel”, Best Aerial, Best Maneuver.
Order of segments will be determined on competition day.

- Each hour-long segment will be judged by a panel of up to 10 judges, who are welcome to skimboard as well. Each rider who executes a noteworthy ride in the respective category will be scored by all the judges who witness the ride. The judges’ scores will be averaged and at the end of the segment and the rider who receives the highest average score will be deemed the segment winner (to be announced at end of competition). Judges are human too, so some rides may be missed. Simply put, during the best barrel hour, riders will try to get the best barrel. “Best” is subjective, that’s why there are numerous judges: to get a better sample than just three people’s inputs.

- While there may be many skimmers catching waves, it is very easy to see those who are getting the better waves. Everyone will be visible and judged if a worthy wave is caught, but not every wave that a skimmer gets will get scored. This is setup like an hour-long expression session. Get a standout wave, you receive a score. After the first 25% of the segment, it will be easy for judges to see who is in contention for the top prize, and who to narrow their focus on, while still looking for other good rides from all skimmers. All judges will have their own scorecards and can document scores as they see fit.

- Wave scores will be entered along with ride description, estimated time, and rider’s name. Scores will be entered into a spreadsheet to calculate the winner for each segment.

- Contestants are welcome to bring their own food and beverages. FOOD/WATER will not be provided.

- Entry fee: $5. Collected monies will be used to pay the judges for their 3 hours of time.

- Location will be: Spanish House, Spessard Holland, or South Side Sebastian inlet

- Location determined in the final week before the event. See Skimonline thread (http://209.200.226.154/forum/showthread.php?t=1872) for up to date info
