nicer cars require it. Some cars will knock and ping with the lower octain gasoline. My scooter requires premium, good thing I dont even have to put 2 gallons in it and I get 60+ miles to the gallon.

Turbo cars require it unless tuned/running on minimal boost to a lower octane gas

From what I understand, regular unleaded creates sludge in your pistons in the long run, and super burns really hot, decreasing the life of your engine. So premium creates the right balance between quick, and hot burning, and cleaner gas.

A lot of luxury cars require it too. Like someone else said, if the car requires it, but its not used, the car will knock...

I have to, which sucks. It's like 3.15 here.

my dad has driven an infiniti q45 since 94, using regular the entire time. is this not considered a luxury car? also, my aunt has a 95 5 series and uses regular.

Ok, lame. My dad told me I have to put premium in my 95 5 series, so I have.

A perfect example, Navigators require it, H2's don't... Apparently Q-45's don't. I heard that the newer 5 series do require it though, as well as the M series...

They're just Nissans. they could run on water alone and it wouldn't improve their performance.

Cars are tuned for a certain spec of octane, which is the real difference in the three grades of gasoline. The higher the octane spec, the more explosive the gasoline is... it's really as simple as that. If you don't know what type of gasoline your car was tuned to use primarily from the factory, you really could be wasting your money buying premium. Sometimes cars run fine with any type of gasoline and sometimes they can lose power or gain power with different octane specs. Higher compression engines (turbo causes higher compression because of forced induction) require a more highly explosive gas because the combustion pressure is greater.
For example, when Honda created the F22 engine, a 2.2L four cylinder, they tuned it for 87 octane gas, which is typically "regular" in most states. Tests have been run that show that by using premium, 91 or 93 octane gasoline, I could actually be losing a miniscule amount of power, about 4 hp at the most.

Gotta buy premium for my WRX which is like $3.35 here in Norcal right now. Sucks when I live at least 30 miles from the nearest beach and usually skim 5 days out of the week.

Damn, I'm looking for a pretty good car with good gas mileage, I love my car to death, but I fill up at least once a week and I go off to college next August so less money for gas is definately a plus.

2.81 here
only place i've seen that at is the Race Track on alafaya. Everywhere else was like 2.91 and 2.85.
Stopped here in St. Aug for a fillup today - $3.19 for premium/93 +ouch+ though after hearing some west coast prices, I feel sort of lucky. Have to be careful around here, any of the stations around tourist areas, or right off 95 will hit you up for another $0.20-$0.30/gallon
Good thing we both: work from home, hang out here most of the time, the beach is across the street, DVD's come via mail and we order everything online. Hell our cars sit around most of the time, 95% of our gas use is for fun!

alls I know is I pay $60+ to fill my 19 gallon tank and it lasts about a week (I do drive quite a bit for work) -and if I drive to Santa Cruz for the weekend I spend $70 to go there and back. Fuck gas.
