Ok this is for you car people. My jeep is a 2003 Liberty. Recently the engine has started clacking and rattling really bad. Also the fluid for my radiator has been going down really fast causing my heater to not work properly. My dad thinks my head gasket is going out because water was running out my tail pipe and from the under carriage of my jeep(not from the a/c either).

Any ideas on if that is the problem or not? Or how much it will cost for a rebuilt engine or new head gasket? Thanks!

Sounds like you should go buy a new engine.

Is there white smoke coming from the exhaust? If you're losing coolant it's likely a headgasket. Has it been overheating? Serious misfires?

If you're leaking coolant into the oil passages it can also muddy up the oil (it'll be all frothy, best way to describe it). If you've mixed oil and coolent and run it/turned it over, you could cause some serious cylinder damage (i.e., need a full on rebuild).

It could be the water pump too - that'd be a reasonably cheap fix.

I'd say if it's a HG and you have to pay someone to do it - $1000-$1500 depending on exact labor rates and any machine work that it might need (like resurfacing the heads).

If it's a motor - I have no idea, but I would figure a late model pull and rebuild would set you back $3500-$4000.

Shutup, DT. It should have ended with my V-Dubya pun. That's the solution.

A buddy of mine is doing a 447CI build that he might bail on for a smaller CI with twin turbos. ~$7500 for the short block, do some ETP 235cc heads, big cam, etc., probably $12-13K installed, but then you'd have a nice 650HP setup :D

No smoke coming from the exhaust. The engine has not been over heating either. No misfires but my jeep sometimes will "shake" when its sitting still at a stop light or just idling. Feels like it hesitates a little when I step on the gas too sometimes.

Any else think it might be the heater core?

Does the heater work at all in the car, also does it seem like the water/coolant is leaking from further up than where the ac drips or further back?

Did you ever check the oil? If its milky white then you have a big problem.

Its leaking green fluid from under the front of the engine not in a normal spot I am assuming. The heater works until the water level in my coolant resevoir gets to low. Dad check the oil its fine. The water level drops fast as hell.

My Jeep lost water in front of the engine, it turned out to be a bad water pump.

kyleskim6

Last time my engine was knocking one of the cylinders was out and I had to have them rebuild the whole cylinder, same issue with the lack of power when you throttle from idle. Better check it out and try not to drive it. If your engine is knocking I know it is a cause for serious concern.

1st. I'll be the one to say it, you bought American
2nd water pump, fix it if it siezes it could snap the timing belt and cause cylinder head damage

Most likely a kanuter valve problem. Ask the machanic to check it for you. They usually go out pretty quick on Jeeps

txsandskimmer77
01-16-2008, 06:52 AM
Ok so here is what the shop said:

1. Bad Idler Pulley
2. Bad Compressor
3. Leaking Radiator
4. Leaking Power Steering Hose
5. Need New Water Pump

He also said that my radiator and power steering fluid were leaking down onto the electrial conduit so that sucks. All in all he said around $1,000 to fix which includes labor...but he said it might be lower.
