I was talking to a surfer recently who informed me that skimming is the "fruit booting" of the surfing world--that is why they call it "fruit scooting"

Does it ever end??

Ill kill every wannabe surfer on the gulf and east coast for that

i have always found it amusing that when i was younger, i "fruit-booted" instead of skateboarding. and now i skim instead of surf.

i'm just a too cool for them i guess

hahah Im also a "fruit booter" The funny thing is. I belive our sport is more risky. You dont get barreled and hold you're breth. You get the breath pounded out of you on the shore! 50% of it is running also, then technique. I definatly think someone can become a good surfer faster than a good skimmer. And hands down we eat it harder 80% of he time. Exception for the big wave riders.

^ not only that, but I think skimboarding is a lot more enjoyable to watch. Everything from the transition from land to water and back. Its an art.
Now I havent watched that many surf movies, but the ones that I have seen are all the same. Big waves are cool and all but meh. I just like watching Froot Skooting more.

To me both are a shitload of fun. However, I started wave skimming and surfing at the same time and progressed in surfing alot faster. Skimming is harder to me then surfing is but I enjoy both thoroughly and would much rather be doing either of the two over virtually anything else including sex.

Skimming by far is more complicated than surfing, takes way more coordination and technique. Surfing alls you do is paddle your ass into a wave. Skimming you're running full speed and getting onto a board hauling ass across the sand. Hm, I wonder what is more dangerous. Surfers that think skimboarding is the "fruit booting" of the surfing world are morons who should get punched in the head.

We all know boogie boarding is the "fruit-booting" of surfing.

09-27-2007, 10:26 AM
i like doing both, but skimming is defiantly more fun, also, some surfing takes place way off shore, no one can really see you sometimes, where skim boarding, your riding waves only a few feet away from everybody, looks alot cooler hahaha

i agree with dannj in the dirty jersey the froot booting of the surfing is deff. the renters that stand on the shore and ride the shore break in on "boogie boards" haha

I think surfing is more enjoyable to watch. Don't get me wrong, I love skimming, but seeing a surfer get barreled and get spit out and then go for a sick cutback. Nothing looks better.

I think that the best part of this thread is that Skimcentral, aka Mike Cole lives on the Gulfcoast of Florida. So if you see where Im going with this, no surfer on the gulfcoast of Florida has any right to call someone names. We barely get skim let alone surf. I hope this guy that said this comes down to North Jetty one day so I can get a big bottom turn with my skim snake his ass then put a whole in his surf board. I cant stand it when people knock on skimboarding because half the kids that do it on the gulfcoast and anywhere else at that matter skim on the sand so thats were their arguments come from. Ive pulled into bigger shit than 90 % of these so called hard core surfers, without fins. We got alot of respect from the surfers at the Sebastian inlet pro and they were pros, so whos the people talking shit?????

I agree with all of that. All the surfers I have met on the West Coast either say I could never skimboard its to hard, or you guys are fucking crazy riding those size waves without fins right on shore.

Must be a gulf coast thing...

for real. All the surfers are just entertained for the most part when I skim. And when I fall or bust my ass or somethin' they laugh their asses off and are like, "Thats why i surf." surfing can be really really fun tho, I just like skimming better. It definitely takes more athleticism.

surfing is still pretty cool. I dont do it because I live in the great lake and I have a fear of drowing being that far out from land. However I am sure I could still drown while skimboarding, if a strong wave pulls me out.

Bs, surfing takes alot of upper body strength. You must have never surfed before otherwise you wouldn't be saying that. But you may be saying but old fat guys surf, look at a pro surfer, tell me he doesn't look just as athletic if not more so then a pro skimmer.

good point. I speaking from more of a runner's point of view. I have surfed a little and you are right it takes a hell of a lot more work with your arms then skimming. Each is different. When I think of athleticism I think of agility, quickness and skill. I would say surfing takes more strength.

definetly. my dad can bench 300 pounds. i can bench 150. but im twice as athletic as he is since i weigh 150 and he weighs 350.

some people would argue that he is in better shape since he is stronger. some would argue the im in better shape since im faster

its just your interpretation of what "in shape" is

TPMatt
09-27-2007, 03:45 PM
theres really no way to compare the two. i would much rather go surfing on any day that is about waist glass+. the fun part of surfing is just flying down the line, and you really cant get the same feeling on a skim. with a skim, its alot of work for a very short ride, but its also a very fun ride. before i started skimming, i thought it was very gay, and for people that couldnt surf, but its really not that at all. like i said, its a completely different feeling, but nothing beats the feeling of paddling into the perfect position, and barely making a chest or head high wave, only to fly down the line, fall, and get worked in 2 feet of water (my average wave when it gets that big). with all that being said, ive only skimmed for a couple months, and surfed for a couple years, so maybe ill grow to like skimming more than surfing one day. but neither are "gay", and if you are calling either one gay, you probably havent tried it, or suck at it.

I think in shape is a mixture of:
1 - Running endurance, speed, and agility/maneuverability.
2 - Physical strength, and endurance.
3 - Mental Endurance.
4 - Comparable weight comes with these.

thats just me though.

Most surfers i know see me skim and say they would never try that shit. Also, The main reason i surf is so i can get better at skimming: by riding the waves and what not.

No one fruit boots to get better at skateboarding.
Thats why skimming is not froot anything.

This dude that said this was from Cali...so there goes the gulf coaster theory.
But you are right anyway though Justin--lots of gulf surfers think skimming is lame. But there are groups of dorks who think that everywhere, evidently.

I sent this guy Skimonline and told him to check out some of the vids from Wedge and such--Hopefully I made a difference in his life. If I can help change even just one dork, it is all worthwhile!!!

Where I live no one has even heard of skimming except for what the fat kids and bennys do on the beach. Then I have to go on youtube, pull up a sick vid and show them what real skimming is. Then everyone is like "wow that looks crazy."

As for the shark theory, most shark attacks happen with in 50 yards of the beach I think in like 3ft of water. If there are sharks there they are getting you if they want to.

hahahahahahaha that gulf surfers part is hillarious , what is more lame then sitting around GULF SIDE waiting around for even just a bit of surf to roll in every other month... while us that skimboard are out making do with everything we got and those of us that surf as well thats cool to... at least we are not the "gulf coast hard core surfers" when their is no swell they are at home having their dog lick the peanut butter off their balls..
although this whole categorizing sports

Most of the Pros that I know and met respect skimming because skimboarders are punting huge airs and getting all tech.
Fuck, Cory Lopez skims a little still and so does Jamie O'Brien.
Its ignorant to hate on one type of wave riding. I am an equall opportunity board rider, I perfer my shortboard or my skim, but trust me if its going off and i dont have the two, Ill jump on a longboard or a retro.

skimninja

the surfers are just mad that bill is crushing 20 footers with no fins in teahupoo on fuel, riding beaker at that using the nose as a fin. so truthfully same size wave ridden is much harder on skim then surf and much faster and also like bill said its better to get a 100 waves every hour on skim instead of 10-20 waves on a surfboard.

when it comes to injury its all the same. sand and coral both hurt. you can break your neck in both sports.

I never heard of a skimmer getting bitten by a shark either.
I wanna surf, but damn, there is scary shit in the ocean.

I was a surfer years before I was a skimmer, and this is what I think. When I surfed almost everyday, my upper body got really strong, because most of the time I was paddling. When skimming, my legs got really strong. From my years of doing both, I think riding a wave on a skimboard is a lot harder. As a past surfer, my friends and I would kick out when we hit the shore break. Most of the surfers I knew liked falling on the water not sand. I have been chased out of the water by sharks surfing, but never skimming. Don't get me wrong, I still love surfing, it's my roots. Making surfboards has helped me develop skimboards designs. So I owe a lot to surfing. I would not say one is better than the other. The main reason I skim a lot more is, surfing just got too crowded, and it's colder because you're laying in the water most of the time. Skimming you're standing or running most of the time, you're not in the cold water most of the time like surfing.
