View Full Version : way to prevent some of the "what beginner board should i buy?" threads

is there any way that a note/page/blurb could be shown to new forum members right after they sign in that would tell them to/show them how to search? they could be redirected to a page with that info on it. it might cut back on the what board to buy threads which clutter the mb and just piss everyone off.

just a new section would work out fine

no. a "new to skimboarding" or "skimboarding noobs" section or subsection would seen ideal, but it has its setbacks.

problem - what often happen is people well...are noobs...and dont realize there is a subsection. They end up posting in the main disc anyways. This only leads to regulars posting "Wrong section noob" "GTFO" "we have a noob section for a reason fag". There ends up being 10 posts of "wrong section" before the person might get a reasonable answer.

this also adds to the moderator and admins job to move the threads into the right section.

skimonline has been running for years. i dont know, but im fairly sure if its worked out this long, we'll live. I try not to be a dick often and lead people with the right information, but like others i do get ticked with 3 "zap wedge or vic ultra" on the first page.

just my 2cents.

well i wasnt sayin a section. just a simple pop up message telling them to search before posting and/or showing them how to search

there should be a "did you search?" popup that comes up if they create a thread within a certain amount of time from registering

true. Actually its different for everybody.....some shed their noob skin quickly....others wear it forever. Case by case basis.

You realize your complaining about people who need knowledge of our sport we call skimboarding which is why they(the noobs) come on here and request info.

Couldn't agree with you more on this one dirty. It seems that people lose grasp on what this site's real purpose is.

The 1st thing it says on the homepage is "Welcome to the largest skimboarding source anywhere, SkimOnline.com. Here you will find skimboarding pictures, videos and multimedia as well as information about equipment, how to skimboard, and where to skimboard. If it can be called skimboarding, it is on SkimOnline.com!

its not getting rid of the information it is just moving it to a more obvious area that will make it easier for newbs to find it as the search function for these boards is a little funkay.

jhooligan
08-24-2007, 12:26 PM
exactly. im not saying they shouldn't be able to get info/help. i'm just saying that usually they can search for the information and find it without having to make a whole thread. more often than not, they don't even get meaningful replies in those threads but rather things like "ZOMG use the SEARCH button"

the search button is a little obscure and not overly intuitive so a message showing them how to search could be helpful and cut down on duplicate threads.

the problems is that people dont want other people's answers. they want recommendations for them. I know I do it on other subjects. I try to search, but in the end I usually end up asking a noob question anyway.

If you dont want to deal with it just dont read it. Its not that hard.

I will consider a new section if it gets out of control. 4 threads a week is not "out of control".

I agree. If you don't like what a new user postes or has to say then don't read it or don't respond. It is that simple.
unless that user makes 10+ different topics on random subject and is gay

Ammy
08-24-2007, 06:20 PM
and updates everybody to the second of when they are skimming, especially when it is just flat sand really.
