The Water is mud brown from a string of REALLY hot weather that killed all the seaweed.

Taken with a terrible camera, conditions were waist +. Tubes to be had. And its 15 miles from where I live, not 70. = p

Please don't assume the Cape water is dirty. It's actually very clean. End of July into August seaweed rolls along the shore sometimes.

but what sucks is, seals are attracted to the seaweed b.c of all the fish that hide out in it. And there is now a growing threat of whales and great whites. A record # of dead seals are washing up on shore with massive shark bites in their side.

SeanS
08-13-2007, 07:13 AM
well not really a threat that whales are around but...

M I K E V
08-13-2007, 07:29 AM

I dont think the whole shark deal is too much of a threat for skimming...surfing-yes.

SeanS
08-13-2007, 07:46 AM
Mike you have been surfing in seaweed down here right?

its pretty un-nerving

ive paddled out and come across a shark and a couple whales....the whales were probably the coolest thing. i was right off the back of the sandbar and i heard the blow hole and turned around and saw two whales swim right by me...hands down the coolest thing ever to happen to me while at the beach.

I grew up on the Cape when I was a younster, parents used to have a cottage down there. I moved to FLA when I was 13 and only went to the Cape on holidays to see my fam.

Havent been in the ocean more than 2 times up there in 15 years.

The coldest I have ever skimmed was maybe down here with a topper in the winter, I think the water was 70 and the air was 60, anything below that is too cold.

Its a damn shame how much the blood thins out after so many years and so many hot summers in FLA.

yes 64 degree water is cold after 30 minutes to me, I noticed some dudes still wearing full suits.....as well?? I was only in boardshorts when I skimmed 64 degree water....fuk that shit is cold.

Mike you have been surfing in seaweed down here right?

Yes, and seeing as sharks like murky water and are most active in the Northeast in August, it is in the back of your mind. But it's no reason to not surf, fate will take its path.

And oh yeah, 64 is warm, please, especially when you're in and out of the water in skimming. I went to the Cape two weekends ago and I think I was the only one of about 30-40 surfers wearing trunks, the water was like 65+. Wetsuits in August is a crime! On select days the water is colder than others. It's been bouncing between 60-70 all week.

I'm seriously considering going up to Boston next weekend and watching the Sox on Wednesday, going to see the Bouncing Souls on Thursday, and then going to Cape on Firday. Odds are it won't happen but it could be an awesome trip.

And I'm pretty used to walking over airhead wrappers, seeing plastic bags in the ocean, random band aides on the shore, and so much other shit that I feel uncomfortable when it isn't there. I can't really talk shit though because technically I'm a Benny and it's my people that are ruining the beaches.

I was only in boardshorts when I skimmed 64 degree water....fuk that shit is cold.

damn 64 way warm. we usually trunk it in 55+ here in norcal. im down in laguna now and the water isnt even refreshing

water that temp sucks when you first get in and then you get used to it and it is fine....

Can't wait to surf this weekend with the additional shark sitings on the cape!!

BDirty

yea water doesnt get below 71 degrees in South FLa, we swim in a bath tub all summer....in the winter if the water hits 70 I put on a topper with the cool NW breezes from the cold fronts.

The only thing that sucks up here is the wind. When you get out and your just standing around you can get a big cold with the wind.

yeah water temp usually doesnt matter. its all about the wind chill

Cape Cod beach alert as great whites gather (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/wn_report/2007/08/16/2007-08-16_cape_cod_beach_alert_as_great_whites_gat.html)

it happens all the time don't worry about it, the only reason this one bmade the news is cause people saw the seal get attacked. there are no more so far this year than any other year in the past 2 decades so just dont swim with the seals and you will be fine. they did a study that shows you are 10 times more likely to be attacked by a seal then a shark.

Scare tactics, they're always out there, just now everyone seems to be realizing.
I mean come on, its August aka North East shark season. This is not a shocker.

Honestly, there is so many living things in that water that we DONT see. Countless times i have seen things on the sandbars. I really wouldn't be all that shocked to find out that a shark has swam under me without me knowing.....

People are all just saying this b.c they think that It is such a large food source for sharks and they are finally realizes the seals are there.

Yeah, I was out surfing today and I could have sworn I saw something under neath me. It didn't really bother me at all because there was a dead blue fish about 50-100 yards away that was about 22-23 inches. The fucking thing was huge. I swam next to it and thought it was a rag but was wrong. The tide took it away though so it was all good. Sharks have been hunted so much that they are pretty rare in the north east. I mean, yes you will get your bull sharks and the occasional great white sighting but unless you are swimming in either the ocean or a river I wouldn't worry about anything as long as you just don't go out during dawn and dusk or when you see like a school of fish jumping out of the water. They are pretty easy to avoid.
