Last night I received word that Brad Domke broke his leg while skimming in Cabo.

I have been told the break is "bad", but should heal 100%. I understand that there were fractures near his ankle in his tibula and fibula, as well as his "growth plate"(???). It required surgery and last I heard, that was scheduled to take place at 9AM this morning, in Mexico. Paulo's father is an orthopedic surgeon and fluent in spanish, and he has been in contact with the surgeons, making sure everything sounds right. Brad was surrounded by many friends and his family was contacted immediately. I will post updates on his condition as I hear them.

What I was told by one of the locals down there is he, skelator, and sammy were all going out to a pretty good size wave and skelator and sammy went in Brad went to the top and air dropped the thing and did what is now said by Aaron. Alot of people really dont know the power down there its crazy especially if its breaking at Yellows. Once again get better quick donkey

Aaron... Growthplates are on the end of your bones, if i'm correct they are just like ordinary bone as soon as you are fully grown untill then it's not very good to break them..

@ Domke: Get Well Soon!!! don't like seeing other skimmers in pain... or hearing they are in pain!!


*EDIT* looked @ Exile team-page... it says he's only 16 years old (maybe 17 now)... at this point he's not fully grown thus his growth plates break is if i'm correct even worse then a normal break!

yeah a broken growth plate is not good. my friend broke his growth plate jumping over a pool fence. stupid but yeah it can effect how much you grow. depending on what side it broke can make one side taller than the other....best of luck.

duuude. that is so rough. especially in mexico. i've been around a lot of gnarly breaks in dirt biking, but it's scary to hear about it in skimming -leave it to cabo i guess.

Thats really kind of you to offer Luis, but I think Pualo and the guys have it under control. Operation appears to have gone smoothly this morning. I talked to Brad's mom and she said that Brad had most of the team just staying with him in the hospital. Paulo is nearly fluent in spanish, so I am sure that helps. He is going to stick it out in mexico for at least the next couple days. I think he goes back to the hotel real soon.

I'll tell Paul to go to the hospital, maybe he can help a little more with the spanish thing.. I also talked to my mom, she said that if Domke doesn´t want to come back to the hotel he can spend the rest of the days at my house, my mom and family wil take care of him.. anything Aaron he needs you know he can stand by us, specially in Mexico.

Ya know, for being in the situation of your leg getting broken broken and having to have surgury in a foreign country, Domke couldnt be in better hands. It's good to hear that his fellow friends and skimmers are looking out for him. I think that alone says something about the skim community.

Just out of curiosity, how is a minor able to travel out of the country without a parent? I remember seeing a skate video awhile back, can't remember which one. But there was a grom on the team that traveled with them throughout the US, but before the hit canada they had to send him back on a plane because he was still a minor.

Utah You are allowed to leave the country if you have a notorized letter from both parents to leave. That happend to Hickey the first year he was going out to Cabo he made it all the way from Florida to San Diego and they stopped him there and told him he cant go. That would really have to suck...

And Luis you guys down in Cabo are true people, people who will be there no matter what and Ive noticed that with all of you down there. Keep up the good spirits.

Actually. it was during the peak of the swell on the incoming tide. The waves were gnarly and right on shore, and very fun, probably one of the better sessions so far.
The wave was roughly about waist high, 3 feet give or take, but heavy onshore.
I remember being on the left, Domke in the middle, and Skele on the right.
I'm walking up hearing Domke screaming.
Poor kid, it was by far one of the worst skim injuries I've ever witnessed. I think he was doing the gnarly wrap air drops like in bearded at lovers.
Someone probably has video.

Yeah I tried to do that too once when my friend's left early on me and I was there for a couple more hours, I went at a wave and twisted my knee, I tried to get up really fast but didnt realize it was worse than I thought and fell back down as my board was being washed down the beach, everyone (tourists, no skimmers) that was at the beach was just sitting there staring at me limp after my board slowly as its getting washed farther and farther away from me, no one bothered to help at all. They all just sat there and stared as if this was amusing to watch me suffer.
