WAVE TYPE: Powerful to playful shorebreak, solid rights

SWELL DIRECTION: Southeast

SWELL SIZE: Large swells during hurricane season generally work best

BEST TIDE: High tide on a big wave day, (5-8ft.)

Long Nook Beach is located on Cape Cod. The beach in general is quite steep, waves break hard on the shore, and there are always two or three decent spots within 1/4 mi. on either side of the beach access (many more if you want to walk.) East coast surf is irregular but the best waves come around storms, (most consistently during hurricane season.) Whenever the wind blows out of the east for at least a couple days there can be good waves too. The skimming is best with little wind at mid to high tide in waves knee to a little bit over head high; any bigger and they break outside. Most swell comes from the south east, wrapping around the edge of the cape and as a result there can be excellent rights, but there are plenty of places to go both ways because of the shifting sand.

DIRECTIONS: take route 6 (just about the only one) from the Sagamore Bridge out to the cape approximately 60 miles until you get to Truro. The Long Nook Rd is on your right. There aren’t any real landmarks but the town is real small and once you drive past the Truro exit keep an eye out on your right (the road is about 3 miles past the first Truro exit.) If you go past the Truro elementary school you have gone about 2 miles too far. When you find it go down Long Nook Rd to the end (2 or 3 miles) and you’re there.

SKIM SPOT DETAILS

WAVE TYPE: Powerful shorebreak

BEST TIDES: Rising or Dropping

Just South of Dewey Beach, this beach provides the most powerful shorebreak in Delaware. On an average day, 4-5 foot waves roll in to pound the shore about 10 to 15 feet out. On an incredible day, we’ve seen 7 footers rolling in. Now this spot isn’t a wish come true so it’s not always good, but we can usually depend on South Side for great skim. The best time to go is when the tides are changing, either from high to low, or low to high, it doesn’t really matter, but don’t ever go on dead high or dead low…..you’ll never reach the waves.

In order to get to South Side, head southbound out of Dewey down route 1 until you hit a big bridge, this bridge goes over Indian River Inlet. Go over the bridge and as soon as you get completely over get on the right turnoff, follow that road back under the bridge and you will come to a toll booth and you’re there. This place is a state park and the lifeguards have set certain boundaries where people cannot skim. You must go outside of the orange flags in order to skim.

WAVE TYPE: Peeling lefts and rights on either side of the jetty

BEST TIDE: High

SLOPE: Good slope on high tide

BEST SEASON: Summer

ACCESS/PARKING: Dewey beach is very easy to get to. Follow Route 1 which runs directly through Dewey and park somewhere within the township. Parking requires a season pass so you will have to pay at a meter or at one of the side lots. Alternatively, follow signs to Rehoboth and park on the south side of the township. Parking is free and you can easily walk to the southern most jetty of this township.

COMMENTS: One of the best skimming spots on the east coast exists in the second smallest state within the union, Delaware. Although there are several good skimming sites on this states coastline, Dewey Beach is by far the best. This is the only area on the east coast I have visited that truly is beach break. This area is ideal for skimmers and is truly the east coast capital of skimming. Any section of beach within the township is good for skimming however, due to the crowds and such, the northern most stretch of beach is by far the best. There is a rock jetty that separates Dewey from the neighboring community of Rehobeth Beach. This jetty is a perfect spot for riding waves at high tide since the waves peel right or left depending which side you are on. I’ve ridden this break during the summer months on and off for the past seven years and am convinced it is the best within the state. Best time to ride is definitely high tide, since the beach is so steep this is the only time to get adequate run up for setting up. On a good day, 3-4 foot waves are common within 5-10 feet off shore. Typically the waves have good form and are steep enough for aerials.

Emerald Isle is great for skimboarding for several reasons: The beaches outside of a few public beaches, even in the peak of the summer, are generally sparsely populated, so there is plenty of room. There is also a fairly gentle slope for beginners to learn, yet close shore-break waves for the advanced to ride out on. Lastly, the water is generally warm by early summer. If you also surf, there is a good surfing by Bogue Inlet Pier.

Basically, you take 95 north or south into North Carolina, depending on your location on the East Coast of the US. The following is a map of the state illustrating the many roads to Emerald Isle:

The Islander

This spot is best at high tide but at low tide the break is still pretty close. September and October are the best times because of a constant North Winds and hurricane swells. On some days there are 6 to 7 ft sets of perfect glass walls. Unfortunately this only happens a few times during the year. The slope is pretty wicked at high tide. It is one of the best spots to skim in the area.

Go to Emerald Isle and take the second right turn after you cross the bridge. Or Turn left at Playland if you’re coming from the other direction. There will be a public beach access sign on you’re right and you turn there.

This is a cool little beach that is not overly crowded. It is very long and easy to ride if you catch a good tide and a good day. Even on a regular day it is still good. Some times of year like late August are great if you like to go towards the ocean (good slope), yet Spring is better for riding in the shallows (anytime is good really). When the tide is going out is the best time yet, all are good. The only disadvantage is sometimes a current can pick up. OVERALL: This beach is great if you want a good ride with some good hospitality. There are few if any shells. P.S. The center of the island is most crowded so go to the East or West End of the island.

Ocean Isle is about 45 to an hour South-West of Wilmington. If you head south on Interstate 17 (from Wilmington) you will see a huge billboard that says Ocean Isle turn here. You will get on a road that will take you about 4 miles to a stoplight. If you see a small airport on the left you’re good. Keep straight through the light and go over the bridge. You made it!!

Duck is one of the most underrated spots in North Carolina. It is also one of the coolest little towns ever. Over the past 10 years I have seen everything from head high powerful wraps to perfect peeling point break liners. Just like most other spots in N.C, in Duck you have to do some searching in order to find these waves. One spot that is usually pretty consistent is the Research Pier, there’s usually something breaking close to shore here whether it be big wraps or long liners around the pier. To get to duck just head North on Route 12 from Kitty Hawk, its the town before Corolla.
