Wedge Blackball Meeting and Petition
By Aaron Peluso
The Wedge has long been regarded as the absolute best wave in skimboarding. What many people don’t know however is that for more than 20 years skimboarders along with bodyboarders and surfers have been banned from the break 10am – 5pm every day from May 1st until Oct 31st.
This is a huge chunk of time at the most premiere spot in the world where skimboarders are simply banned.
What can I do?
FIRST: There is a meeting at Newport Beach City hall this Monday Oct 21st to discuss blackball regulations in the city.
More Information: http://www.newportbeachca.gov/index.aspx?page=2302
If you live in the area and care about skimboarding, please come to this meeting and show your support.
SECOND: If you cannot make it to the meeting, please send your comments regarding blackball at the Wedge to: Blackball@newportbeachca.gov
If you decide to write, please consider including your opinions on the safety of boards of all kinds in the lineup at The Wedge. The city has been told in the past (largely by bodysurfers) that all boards (flotation devices) pose a unreasonable hazard at the Wedge. This is the primary basis for the city banning skimboarding (along with bodyboarding and surfing) for 20 years. Please consider telling them its just not true and that boards are used safely in lineups all over the world, including The Wedge (before and after blackball).
THIRD: If you have not done so, please consider signing this petition to end blackball at The Wedge:
20 years ago the bodysurfers snuck through city council and got us all banned from the best skim spot in the world while no one was looking. If we stand together and speak up as one, perhaps we can undo some of this injustice for future generations of board riders.
