Zap Amateur World Championships

The weekend of August the 11th and 12th marked the 31st year of our deeply rooted skimboarding competition; The Zap Amateur World Championships of Skimboarding presented by Alley-Oop and Skim USA. Skimboarders from as far away as Brazil came to sample the world famous shore break that Dewey Beach has to offer. Mother nature cooperated nicely by producing a 2-4ft south swell that started Friday evening and slowly faded out on Sunday giving competitors some long, rippable waves to ride all through the competition. It was definitely some of the better skim conditions Dewey had seen all summer.

Just like last year we invited a few top riders from California and internationally to help with our goal of having the best amateur riders from around the world attend this event. For this year Skim USA selected four riders to offer support in the form of a plane ticket, a place to stay, and tour guidance from myself and Dave Scott. These rider were Geo Reyes and Grant Noble from California. Sofia Lopes from Portugal and Guilherme Vaz from Brazil.

The crew got to enjoy the Dewey Beach lifestyle all week. Some fun skim, Grinch winching, skateboarding, filming with Toeknee ABC123 (Tony Bianchi), and of course some of the always entertaining Dewey night life.
All of the invitees made it to at least the semi finals with Guilherme from Brazil taking a strong 3rd in Mens and 4th in Semi pro as well as a 4th place finish from Grant in the Jr. Mens division.

Many finalists were awarded high level prizes such as Go Pro’s, flat screen TV’s, Beats by Dre headphones, Nintendo 3DS’s, Wii’s, and a few baller watches! It was awesome to see the stoke on the kids faces as they pulled these prizes out of the prize bags which usually contain clothes, traction, and some gift certificates.

Some other highlights from the weekend to be noted:

Local John Weber won the Semi-Pro division with a flawless performance of wave riding and wave knowledge that earned him $500 and the confidence to declare that he will be turning professional in his next competition. This will add to a solid roster of top Delaware skimboarders who are competing on the pro tour and also considered some of the best riders in the world.

Lucas McCoy took his first win in the highly competitive Men’s division showing a true dedication to his craft after many years of falling just short of the finals in this contest. Lucas has been competing on the Skim USA tour since he was a young child. The beach erupted with some of the loudest cheers of the weekend to let him know his great achievement had been seen and felt by all!

Sr. Men’s division winner from Gulf Shores Alabama, Andrew Culleton became the overall 2012 Zap Amateur Champion by winning the Super Heat of the contest, where all 1st place division winners compete against each other to determine the overall amateur champion. Many expected Jr. Mens winner John Weber to win it with his longer wave rides throughout the heat, but in the end it was the consistency and determination of Andrew that brought home the big trophy and $500 travel voucher from

There were many other great moments and memories made during the weekend. You can check out some nice coverage in the links below. Zap Skimboarders has posted highlights from both days and the best trick even on their blog:

The Washington post also put together a great video that was highlighted on their website. It talks a lot about skimboarding in Dewey Beach and how it is a part of the town’s beach culture:

Skim USA will be releasing a video of the contest week with Toeknee ABC123. It should be awesome so make sure to keep your eyes out for it’s release!

This event would not be possible without all the local and industry sponsors that contribute money, prizes, food, gift certificates, volunteers, and the infrastructure to make it all come together in a package that is considered one of the best skimboarding competitions in the world! Big shout out to all everyone that helped.
