King of Skim
If you were to summarize the King of Skim competition in one word, it would certainly be innovation – both in the riding and the skim scene itself. Held on January 21, 2012 in Praia da Macumba – RJ, the event had a great structure and was well organized. The best Brazilian skimmers were competing, along with an international guest – Ambassador Emanuel (MEGA) of Portugal, who impressed the crowd with his frontside waves.
The event was organized by Bernardo Picorelli (Bzinho) in a format different from previous competitions in Brazil, where each heat was judged on specific categories, which were:
- Frontside waves
- Backside waves
- Airs
- Rotation Maneuvers (shove it, Big Spin, Flip)
- Tube
- Floater
The athletes were divided into six groups, each group had a target as mentioned above. The athlete only won the points corresponding to performing a specific maneuver, while all other maneuvers had no score. Each athlete judged another group and the participants felt the prestige of the King and the difficulty of evaluating each maneuver. In every group, each athlete rode one at a time. Riders had 30 seconds to perform the maneuver.
The winner was the based on the sum of two categories, where the first (highest rating of the category) received 10 points, the second 8, the third 6, the quarter 4, the fifth and sixth one second point.
In the end, Leandro and Renato tied with 18 points and the tie-breaker was a comparison of the averages where Leandro won by only 0.21
Besides an unusual format the ocean was in good form, sending some big waves, long liners, and sun to animate the crowd. It was without a doubt one of the best competitions held in Brazil.
