Obx Day One Recap
Photos and words by Woody Harris
The contest organizers started things off this morning on the Outer Banks with a bang; the pro heats were one of the first rounds run on the scorching, moist Carolina morning. The conditions for the early heats weren’t the best due to the low tide, but definitely contestable. The pros still made the the best of the glassy knee high right to left liners, especially the regular footers who took advantage of the soft, feathery waves.
The standouts from today were all regular footers, who were masterfully floating their way a hundred yards down the beach on minimally sized waves. Jason Wilson proved that he is still one of the best east coast forehand riders around, Brad Domke was turning heads left and right with technical wizardry as usual, Dave Armstrong was shredding on a board that is properly sized for him, about 5 and a half foot tall, and up-and comer Blair Conklin was effortlessly linking insane combos down the faces of the clean, murky lines.
Expect the pros to start competing at around 11 or 12 tomorrow morning, so get there early! The conditions should resemble today, offshore winds, fun liners, and extremely hot, so if you’re planning on coming down to the beach don’t forget your sunblock!
