Reid State Park
SKIM SPOT DETAILS
Same conditions as Popham but a decent side break when the tide is coming in. This is the better of the two. Less crowded and less rocks tend to wash up. Popham is bigger though in terms of rideable sand. Both Have extremely cold water so go on a sunny day

is this happening in 2012 or what?
Reid’s been the best spot I’ve been able to find in Maine this summer. On most days there are rideable waves for 4-6 hours (2-3 hours before and 2-3 hours after high tide). Outside of that window, and closer to low tide, the beach becomes completely flat. Within the window, though, the beach tends to be pretty steep and the waves are close to shore. Usually the best spot is about 100 yards or so down Griffith Head (left at the fork after the toll booth), past the crowd.
I don’t know of any wave forecast specifically for Reid, but I’ve found the Higgins Beach forecast on magicseaweed to be the most accurate. As long as the forecast is at least 1 ft and 8 sec period or so, there should be decent conditions around high tide.
I’ve been going 2-3 times/week, weather and waves allowing, since the end of May. Have yet to see anyone else skimming but I’d love to see some peeps come out. I’m usually there evenings during the week and afternoon/evenings on weekends, when the tides are right.
