Floridian Wave Crave

By Robert Huffman

Throwing out sarcastic and outrageous ideas about skimboarding vacations is just something that skimboarders do. This is especially true for Floridian skimboarders considering that the wave selection is somewhat limited in South Florida.  Therefore, having a conversation about going to Cabo, Mexico for a month on a college student budget is something that almost every skimboarder has done.  The only difference between those conversations and the one that Alex Fanaian and I had is we had such a wave crave that trying to think about anything other than being housed by a head high Cabo barrel was simply impossible.  So, we worked our asses off in the winter and spring at a valet job in downtown Boca Raton, FL, ending up able to afford just 16 days in one of the most desirable skim locations in the world.

Landing in Cabo on July 1, was a dream come true.  Never did I think that in my lifetime would I get a chance to live the dream of every skimboarder in the world.  I remember on the bus to the hotel, peaking over the cliff at the first sight of Pacific Ocean, and it was like slow motion… A slowly breaking right, about 1-2 ft. overhead, it was perfection. I looked back at Alex, trying to contain my anticipation for the trip of a lifetime.  As soon as we got to Hotel Mar de Cortez, we dropped our bags, grabbed our boards to headed to Solmar (one of the best breaks in Cabo).  With some help from the locals, we finally found what we have been waiting for, 2-3 ft. overhead shorebreak with an unexpected 15 knott West wind, (maybe this was going to be harder than I thought).

As we went to the beach everyday, we learned how difficult it is to ride these waves not only with style, but also with aggression.  The rip current was something I have never felt in my life, and with a head high wave smashing down on you and the undertow pulling you out to sea, going for a wave took a lot more confidence than any where else I have been.  But with a lot of practice and the undying desire to “get pitted”, we managed to hold our own and enjoy a great vacation, while respecting the professionals who come out here and absolutely murder this heavy shorebreak.

My 16 days that I spent in Cabo is something I will never forget, even though we ran into some minor problems along the way: passing Yellow Hotels by 3 miles on the bus and having to walk back along the beach to find waves, having our A/C unit quit on us with 4 days left in the trip, getting lost trying to take a shortcut to lovers, and eating those amazing, yet painful tacos on the side of the street.  Thanks to Sean Ward who led us into some of the best waves we got our whole trip and David Behar for encouraging us to wake up at 7am instead of noon, and reminding us that there are, and never will be, waves back at home.  My only regret for this trip is that we didn’t film as much as I had hoped, but I blame that on the perfect shorebreak!

I encourage every skimboarder to take a trip to Cabo, MX, or wherever you want to go, because our body won’t be able to take this beating forever, right Peluso? :)

    • Let’s just say ever since we came back, we maybe skimmed 2-3 times. It’s really hard to go out when there is nothing there.
