The 4th stop for the 2010 United Skim Tour is under way here in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina and day one was an incredible start. Classic, rolling NC style liners licked the sand at Hayman Street as contest organizers assembled the judging stands and all related tents and tables while the competitors warmed up their muscles in anticipation of the great heats to come.
As the tide rose to a preferred height and the gusty offshore breezes shaped the incoming waves, the decision to run professional heats came early and the day started off with a bang. Local boys Michael Brickle, Perry Wells and Woody Harris got straight to business at their home break and impressed the crowd by advancing out of heats stacked with pros from coast to coast. Morgan Just made a swift recovery from his injury at the last event and started out strong, winning his heat with impressive wave selection and difficult maneuvers. Other standouts included Erick Rosenberry, Austin Keen and John Akerman who are all first-year pros and all won their respective heats. This is a very impressive result for all of them and is a strong testament to the level of skimboarding that the youth have been bringing to the table as of late.
Forecasts for day 2 do not seem to agree with each other, but there may be a fresh burst of swell in the morning to add to the already perfect wind and sand conditions and make for a spectacular day. Regardless of the conditions, competitors and spectators alike will be standing on the beach prepared for an exciting day.
