WCS – Day One Coverage

Day one of the WQS was just what you would expect.  Fun waves, great turnout, lots of smiles and stoke for everyone.

However, such a result was far from guaranteed.  All eight divisions of the pro men ran first thing in the morning under gloomy skies and an ominous south wind.  Conditions were challenging and it wasnt at all guaranteed that they would improve.  Thankfully however, as the initial round came to a close sun could be seen popping through the clouds down the beach and within an hour the wind had subsided and the clouds had evaporated.

Almost on cue the first ever Women’s Professional Division was on deck, running under favorable weather and a rising tide.  It was photo op time for the Pro Women as they all huddled near the scaffolding for the historic moment.  Even female skimboarding legend Amber Cottle was on hand to usher in the occasion.  It was  impossible not to smile watching the women enjoy their moment.  The division attracted 13 competitors in total travelling from as far as Hawaii, which were broken into four heats.  As expected, there were a few standout competitors such as Anna Prophet, Shonna Cobb and Keiao Gucwa-Bucasas completing wraps as well as advanced tricks like 360 shove-its.  Women’s Heat Board

After the pro women ran their preliminaries it was time for round two of the Mens Pro division.    Under improving conditions and intense competition, the men squared off in fierce battles to reach the quarter-finals.  Under a dominant NW wind swell, liners were the name of the game with Aliso’s typical wraps taking a back seat in terms of importance.  This was an interesting switch up as riders were forced to demonstrate different strengths than they normally due at this event.  Standouts during this round were reigning champ Brandon Sears, Sam Stinnett, Paulo Prietto, Austin Keen, and Morgan Just.  Men’s Heat Board

After all was said and done, the final 10 break down as follows:
Brandon Sears
Sam Stinnett
Paulo Prietto
Austin Keen
Morgan Just
Nate Zoller
Teddy Vlasis
Hunter Poller
Bill Bryan
Brad Domke

The remaining men are scheduled to face off first thing in the morning tomorrow with the women running shortly after.  With so many of the world’s top professionals at this event, it is the hardest day two in skimboarding.  Congratulations to those who made it and good luck tomorrow.
