Southside Shoot Out Day Two
Sunday, June 6th was finals day for the 5th annual Southside Shootout in Dewey Beach, Delaware, and an intense day for all who attended. Competitors were greeted in the early a.m. hours by even better conditions than the previous day.
As the day wore on, it became obvious that the finals were going to be a heated battle with high scoring waves. Winds shifted to a preferred west/southwest direction and the wind swell inched up in size, while the competitors still left in the competition began to familiarize themselves more and more with the wave. Semifinal heats saw Portugal’s Emanuel “Mega” Embaixador scoring what many felt to be the best waves of the competition early in his heat. Not to be outdone, Sam Stinnett held his ground with his strong, yet risky strategy of picking off the steeper liners that took him well outside the safe boundaries of the competitor’s area. This set the pace for the semi’s and the crowd went wild as judges split hairs to find Dave Scott, Brad Domke the victors in heat 1, and Jason Wilson and Sam Stinnett advancing out of heat 2.
In between semi’s and finals, the tide rose slightly which swamped out the waves, throwing salt in the competitors proverbial game. Nonetheless, spectators gathered round as the buzzer sounded and local favorite Jason Wilson drew first blood on a nice frontside liner. This sparked a sense of competition, which sent the other 3 competitors following suit. Dave Scott showed the benefits of his “monkey crawl” and slid out to connect with some of the larger/longer liners of the heat, grabbing rail and pulling backside into barrel after barrel. Brad Domke showed his technical ability, landing maneuver after maneuver, including a 540 shuv-it. Sam Stinnett stuck to his guns, taking liner after liner down the beach, topped off with various technical tricks well outside the competitor’s area. The same rang true for Jason Wilson, impressing his hometown with big frontside airs and long liners. All the efforts seemed nearly in vain, as Brad Domke put the icing on his own cake with easily the biggest wave of the competition, pulling in frontside and driving through the barrel to the roar of the crowd.
The final results were:
1. Brad Domke
2. Dave Scott
3. Sam Stinnett
4. Jason Wilson
5. Morgan Just
6. Emanuel Embaixador
