L.B.I Skim Jam – Day One Coverage
Although there weren’t a ton of professionals competing, there was still some incredible skimboarding action going down at the L.B.I Skim Jam in Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
In the morning hours, the skimmers were greeted with glassy point break style liners down the beach from the contest and all of the pro’s were going nuts on the knee to waist high waves. Unfortunately, the wind switched onshore which put some chop on the waves just before the pro’s were set to compete. Fortunately, the wind wasn’t too bad and it pushed in some unique wedging liners for the pro’s to get radical on.
If a rider advanced out of this first round, then they were automatically into the semis due to the small number of competitors, but it was still a true challenge to make it into the semi finals. Everyone was on their game and the heats were extremely close. It was nearly impossible to say who advanced after watching each heat. The close heats were accompanied by a few upsets where a rider advanced by a small margin of points. Standouts from today were Morgan Just, Brad Domke, Bill Bryan, and John Akerman. This was John Akerman’s first ever pro heat and he definitely showed that he has what it takes to compete with the big boys.

The wind is offshore now and the forecasts are calling for offshore winds all day tomorrow so hopefully we will have conditions similar to this morning. Check back for a day two update tomorrow night.
